The NYS 2005 FSA open enrollment period begins September 27, 2004. The deadline for enrollment is November 10, 2004, and is strictly enforced. This program helps STATE employees save money when paying for health or dependent care expenses. A paperless application process allows employees to apply online at www.flexspend.state.ny.us or by calling 1-800-358-7202.

3. Stony Brook Celebrates International Education Week
The fifth annual International Education Week (IEW), sponsored by the U.S. Departments of State and Education will take place November 15 - 19, 2004. Stony Brook University joins this worldwide celebration of international education and exchange with a variety of events to promote cross cultural understanding, study abroad programs and opportunities for undergraduate and graduate scholarships overseas.

2. Introducing Dr. Marvin L. Corman, Our New Colon and Rectal Surgeon
The Department of Surgery is very pleased to announce that Marvin L. Corman, MD has joined our Division of Surgical Oncology as professor of surgery. Dr. Corman comes to Stony Brook from North Shore-Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, where he was Vice-Chairman of Surgery and attending colon & rectal surgeon as well as Professor of Surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

A guest speaker from the NYS Office of the Attorney General's Office will be presenting a workshop entitled, Identity Theft and Tips for Protecting Your Privacy. Identity theft, which is fast becoming the most prevalent financial crime in the country affecting nearly half a million new victims each year, goes to the very heart of "information privacy." This workshop provides an overview of the variety of federal and state laws which offer specific privacy rights. You will be receiving a complimentary booklet on identity theft.

1. "Psychosocial Factors in Women's Reproductive Health: Stress, Coping, and Their Effects in Pregnancy"- a talk by Marci Lobel
Marci Lobel, Associate Professor of Psychology, will deliver the third talk in the Feminist Campus Colloquia on Thursday, November 18 at 4:30 pm in the Humanities Institute, Melville Library, E4340. Professor Lobel is Director of The Stony Brook Pregnancy Project and the author of more than forty articles on women's reproductive health and related topics concerning stress, coping, and physical health. Dr. Lobel served as Associate Editor of the journal Women's Health: Research on Gender, Behavior, and Policy, and is currently a Consulting Editor of the Psychology of Women Quarterly.

7. Artist Lucio Pozzi Presents Slide Lecture About His Exhibition at the Staller Center Art Gallery
New York artist Lucio Pozzi will present a slide lecture entitled "The Next 475 Years of My Art and Life" on November 10 at 12:30pm in Room 3220 in the Staller Center for the Arts. The lecture is being offered in conjunction with an exhibition of his work on view at the University Art Gallery in the Staller Center through December 11. 8. Distinguished Lecture in Computer Science: Avi Silberschatz
The Computer Science Department welcomes everyone to its Distinguished Lecture Series, sponsored by Citigroup and the Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology.

Prior to joining Yale, Professor Silberschatz was the Vice President of the Information Sciences Research Center at Bell Laboratories. Prior to that, he held a chaired professorship in the Department of Computer Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin. He is a Fellow of the ACM and IEEE. He received the 2002 IEEE Taylor L. Booth Education Award, the 1998 ACM Karl V. Karlstrom Outstanding Educator Award, and the 1997 ACM SIGMOD Contribution Award.

3. Sunday Acoustic Concert Series at The University Cafe features Terence Martin with special guest Caroline Doctorow on November 14th.
Singer/songwriter Terence Martin, on the heels of an impressive appearance at this summer's Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, comes to Stony Brook University's University Cafe on Sunday, November 14th at 2 P.M. Martin is one of the most impressive new voices on the folk scene, with three highly-acclaimed CD's to his credit, including his most recent release, Sleeper, which has received critical acclaim and radio airplay on public and commercial stations across the country. For his University Cafe appearance, he will be accompanied by Dan Bonis, a master of a range of string instruments, including lap steel guitar.
Sag Harbor's Caroline Doctorow will be opening. Carmel Valley Ride, a CD inspired by the music of Richard and Mimi Farina, is her most recent release.

4. Lucio Pozzi's Photoworks at Staller Center Art Gallery
Spectacular large-scale installations by New York artist Lucio Pozzi will be exhibited at the University Art Gallery in the Staller Center for the Arts from Saturday, November 6 through Saturday, December 11, 2004. The exhibition, "Lucio Pozzi: Photoworks 1975-2004" presents a retrospective survey of works incorporating photographic elements that are mounted, cut, painted, collaged,and then combined with paper, wood, and canvas. An artist's reception will be held on November 20, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. A 12-minute performance by the artist, entitled "Pachameena Guided Tour" will be presented at 8:00 pm on November 20. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm and Saturday, 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Admission to the Gallery, the performance, and the reception is free and open to the public. 1. Long Island Database Project - Volunteers Needed
The Long Island Cancer Center is creating a database of blood samples and clinical information to help researchers better understand why some individuals develop breast and prostate cancer while others do not.

3. Treatment Study for Children's Behavioral Control Problems
The Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Stony Brook University is conducting a study of treatment steps for children, ages 6 to 14, who have attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder plus other behavioral control problems (aggression, explosiveness, low frustration tolerance, etc.). Eligible children receive free evaluation and study treatment, including medication and help with behavioral support strategies. The study is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health.

4. Are You Depressed? We Can Help!
The Department of Psychology at Stony Brook University is conducting up to a 6 month clinical trial involving medication with all participants and the addition of psychotherapy with some. Must be willing to travel up to two times a week for up to 3 months to the site and be available late afternoons/early evenings. If you have been feeling depressed (sad, down) most of the time for at least two years, you may be eligible to participate. All evaluations and treatments will be provided free of charge. 1. 7th Annual Institute for Medicine in Contemporary Society Writing Contest. Guest Judge: John Store, MD and Author
All members of the Stony Brook University community are welcome to enter, including students, faculty, and staff from all departments on both sides of campus, and employees, staff, patients, and families of patients of University Hospital. Previous winners are ineligible in the year after they have won.
Entries may take the form of poetry, short stories, or personal essays. Poetry entries should be no longer than fifty lines, and prose no more than 2,000 words. Each entrant may submit no more than three entries (no matter which category). Submissions must not have been previously published in print or electronic format and must not be under consideration for publication anywhere else.
