3. RF employees - Purchase Savings Bonds through Payroll Deduction. Site visit by National Bond and Trust Co. on Tuesday.

The official Research Foundation vendor for Savings Bonds, National Bond and Trust Company, will have a table set up in the Hospital on Tuesday August 10 on Level 5 in the cafeteria hallway from 7am to 4pm.

2. Volunteer Tutors Needed

Are you interested in becoming a volunteer Tutor? The Stony Brook Adult Literacy Center is in need of volunteers to provide tutoring in basic skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing English). We provide tutoring services for adults who are at least 16 years of age and out of school, read and write at or below the sixth grade level, need to improve their basic English conversation skills and understanding of American culture.
Volunteers will attend a workshop here on campus that will prepare them for becoming a tutor.

Respondus - A New Quizzing Tool for Blackboard
Respondus 2.0 is a powerful tool for creating and managing exams that can be printed to paper or published directly to Blackboard.
Exams are created offline in a familiar Windows environment and the software provides many time-saving tools such as equation editors, web links, and multimedia functions. Existing exams can be converted from eight different formats including word processor files.
Please join us for an overview of how you can use this new tool within your Blackboard site on Monday, August 23rd @ 1:30pm in CELT, Melville Library E1337

2. George Saliba to Lecture at BNL

George Saliba, Professor of Arabic and Islamic Science, Columbia University will give a lecture entitled "Whose Science is Arabic Science in Renaissance Europe?" on Thursday, August 19, 2004 at 4 PM in Berkner Hall, Brookhaven National Lab. This talk will discuss the manner in which scientific ideas, especially in astronomy, crossed cultural, linguistic and religious borders at the time of the Renaissance.

2. Help Stem The Population Of Feral Cats On Campus

The SBU Cat Network works to humanely trap, neuter, vaccinate, and care for the many feral cats that live on campus. Capturing kittens at this time of year often means they can be socialized and placed in homes. Capturing older cats means they can be spayed/neutered to avoid the birth of more cats who must fend for themselves outside. 3. Donations Sought for the 1st Annual National Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis Center Fine Art and Antique Auction

The National Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis Center at Stony Brook University Hospital will be hosting its 1st Annual Fine Art and Antique Auction this fall. We are seeking donations of fine art, antiques and collectibles. These may include paintings, prints, sculptures, sterling silver items, small furniture, lighting, collectible glass, porcelain and pottery items, old toys and sporting goods, coins, jewelry, and anything old, unusual or collectible. All donations are tax deductible and proceeds will directly support the National Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis Center at Stony Brook University Hospital. Spinning a cycling workout that utilizes an adjustable stationary bicycle to take the participants up hills around bends, and travel the "flats" to music and guided imagery. All level welcome.

2. Diabetes And Periodontal (Gum) Disease

Are you a Type 1 Insulin-Dependent Diabetic? Do you have Periodontal (Gum) Disease?
We are conducting a study to determine whether Periodontal Treatment can reduce specific markers of infection/inflammation that may make it more difficult for you and your physician to control diabetes. Study participants receive a free periodontal cleaning and payment up to $300.00. The Department of Anesthesiology is seeking pregnant volunteers for a study investigating if prenatal obstetric anesthesia consults in the third trimester improve patient satisfaction, maternal, and birth outcomes. The Health Sciences Library has free trial access to FIRSTConsult from July-September 2004. FIRSTConsult is a highly innovative, evidence-based clinical information tool for primary health care providers, part of the MD Consult Clinical Knowledge System. It offers tools for differential diagnosis, evaluation and management of medical conditions, patient education and procedure skills review, and synthesizes findings from journals and other respected references into a templated knowledge base that is organized into a highly accessible format and designed for use at the time and point of care.
