4. West Campus Libraries and Blackboard join efforts to offer Electronic Reserves

SBU Libraries, West Campus, is pleased to announce a new Electronic Reserves service for the Spring 2005 semester. Documents selected by faculty will be digitized by library staff, in accordance with Fair Use and other copyright guidelines, and centrally managed through the Blackboard system.
Faculty must first request an E-Reserves course in Blackboard. Once the course has been created, documents are requested through an on-line form on the Reserves webpage, and library Reserve staff will add them to your E-Reserves Blackboard course.

2. Lawson Requisition Training(HTNW27)- for Hospital Employees in the HSC-(9 am-12 pm) 11/30, 12/9, 12/21

This workshop is designed to take you through the process of entering various types of procurement requisitions in the Lawson system including: Entering, changing, and deleting Stores and Vendor requisitions; Adding another page of items; Adding Comments to a requisition; Checking for approvals; Finding a purchase order number for a requisition; Inquiring on a purchase order; Finding receipts for a purchase order; Inquiring on requisitions; Inquiring on a budget; and Blanket Order releases. All Lawson users must attend this course to obtain a user ID & password. 3. Empowering Clients Through Self Help And Social Support: A Model For Group Workers

The School of Social Welfare and the Association for Advancements of Social Work with Groups, Inc. Long Island Chapter is sponsoring this program. The program will discuss the use of mutual aid and social support groups in enhancing the quality of life for chronic mentally ill individuals. The Program will be held on Tuesday December 7, 2004 from 10:00 to 11:30 am at the Stduent Activities Center - Ballroom B. The program is free to students, field instructors, faculty and staff. 5. World AIDS Day - Dec. 1st - SAC Rory Kennedy Talk (12:40 - 2:00 pm)

6. Lecture: Scuba Diving and Decompression Illness

The Stony Brook Scuba Club is hosting a lecture by Dr. Peter Brink (Chair, Stony Brook Department of Physiology and Biophysics) on diving and decompression illness Tuesday evening November 23rd, 7:00 pm, in Room 303 of the Student Activities Center. 7. "The Renaissance Courtesans' Sung Capital" - a talk by Bonnie Gordon

Bonnie Gordon, Assistant Professor of Music, will deliver the fourth talk in the Feminist Campus Colloquia on Thursday, December 2 at 4:30 pm in the Humanities Institute, Melville Library, E4340. Her paper argues that in the Italian Renaissance, song could alter the power dynamic between a courtesan and her patron, thus disrupting bodily and social orders. Professor Gordon is author of Monteverdi's Unruly Women (Cambridge 2004) and co-editor of The Courtesans' Arts (forthcoming from Oxford). FCC speakers for Spring 2005 include: February 17, Anne Moyer (Psychology); March 3, Christa Erickson (Art); and April 7, Ritch Calvin (Women's Studies). All talks will be held at 4:30 in the HISB and are sponsored by HISB and Women's Studies.

As we embark on this holiday season, this season of sharing, let us remember the hopes and dreams of so many of our neighbors in need. This year, the Holiday Gift Program is appealing to individuals to purchase a new toy(s) for children in the 1 to 12 year old range. 3. New York City Gay Men's Chorus comes to Stony Brook

The LGBT Faculty & Staff Network at Stony Brook University announces the establishment of the Pride Scholarship Endowment.

1. Colds and Flu

The Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of Family Medicine is conducting a one and one-half hour lecture on Thursday, December 16th between 5:00 and 6:30 p.m. at their office located at 33 Research Way, East Setauket.
The lecture will focus on how to prevent colds and flu this winter and how to diminish their severity.
The use of vaccines and antiviral medications for the flu is discussed. Lifestyle practices, including nutrition, that promote health and shorten the duration of colds is also addressed.
With patients facing an overabundance of supplements and herbs marketed to treat and prevent colds and flu, the workshop offers research-based evaluations to assess safety and efficacy of the most common supplements and herbs.
The cost is $25.00 per person payable upon registration.

1. Long Island Database Project - Volunteers Needed

The Long Island Cancer Center is creating a database of blood samples and clinical information to help researchers better understand why some individuals develop breast and prostate cancer while others do not.
Women and men are eligible to participate if they were diagnosed with breast or prostate cancer OR have never been diagnosed with these cancers, are 18 years of age or older, are a current Long Island resident and have lived on Long Island for at least 5 years.

3. Are You Depressed? We Can Help!

The Department of Psychology at Stony Brook University is conducting up to a 6 month clinical trial involving medication with all participants and the addition of psychotherapy with some. Must be willing to travel up to two times a week for up to 3 months to the site and be available late afternoons/early evenings. If you have been feeling depressed (sad, down) most of the time for at least two years, you may be eligible to participate. All evaluations and treatments will be provided free of charge. 4. Alzheimer's Disease Trial At SUNY Stony Brook

A Trial of Zocor (an anti-cholesterol medication) to slow the Progression of Alzheimer's Disease. All eligible participants with mild-moderate AD would remain on their current AD treatments, while participating in this trial.

5. How Do You Manage Your Stress During Pregnancy?

Research Study at the General Clinical Research Center, University Hospital.
If you are in the first or second trimester of pregnancy, you may be eligible for a research study that is looking at different ways to manage stress and cope during pregnancy.
Through this study you may learn relaxation techniques, coping skills and stress reduction techniques. These skills may be useful to you during and after your pregnancy.

6. Are You A Type I Insulin-Dependant Diabetic?

We are conducting a study to determine whether periodontal treatment can reduce specific markers of infection/inflammation that may make it more difficult for you and your physician to control diabetes.
Study participants will receive a free periodontal cleaning and payment up to $300.00

7. Select - Selenium And Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial.

SELECT is a research study being conducted to see if prostate cancer can be prevented.
Men who participate in this study will take two capsules a day. Some men will take only selenium or vitamin E and some will take both. Others will take a placebo (sugar capsule).
Participants will visit their local study site twice a year for at least seven years, and no more than twelve years. About 32,000 men will take part in this study.
Men free of prostate cancer who are age 55 or older may be able to take part in this study. African-American men may join at age 50 or older.
Taking part in SELECT may not help you directly. But we hope that the information learned from this study will benefit your sons, grandsons, and future generations.

12. Did You Ever Wonder Why Some People Get Stressed Out More Easily Than Others?

Stress can affect the brain, heart, hormones, and mental performance.
We are looking for men and women, 18-50 years of age, to participate in a non-invasive study.
Participation in this protocol requires that volunteers be free on two consecutive weekdays including two hospital overnights
For example: Sunday night to Tuesday afternoon, or Tuesday night to Thursday afternoon
You will be free to pursue your normal activities after 4:15 pm, but you will need to be back for the overnight stay.
COMPENSATION: $200.00

16. Seeking Volunteers Men And Women 18 Years Of Age And Older With A Diagnosis Of HIV+ And/Or AIDS

We are researching the effectiveness of chromium picolinate (a dietary supplement) in the treatment of complications of current HIV therapy, including insulin resistance (leading to diabetes) and possibly body fat distribution (HIV Lipodystrophy).

17. Seeking Volunteers for a Cancer Study.

We are seeking to identify new cancer markers in blood, tissue and body fluids. This may allow us to develop laboratory tests which can diagnose cancers earlier and/or identify patients who are at risk for a poor outcome and who may benefit from more aggressive therapy than is normally recommended.

2. 7th Annual Institute for Medicine in Contemporary Society Writing Contest. Guest Judge: John Stone, MD and Author

All members of the Stony Brook University community are welcome to enter, including students, faculty, and staff from all departments on both sides of campus, and employees, staff, patients, and families of patients of University Hospital. Previous winners are ineligible in the year after they have won.
Entries may take the form of poetry, short stories, or personal essays. Poetry entries should be no longer than fifty lines, and prose no more than 2,000 words. Each entrant may submit no more than three entries (no matter which category). Submissions must not have been previously published in print or electronic format and must not be under consideration for publication anywhere else.

3. CNA Training Class

The LI State Veterans Home together with the Stony Brook School of Nursing will conduct a Nurse Aide Training Program beginning Monday, January 10, 2005. An Open House will be held on Wednesday, December 1, 2004 from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm in the East Pavilion Classroom. (located next to the Human Resources Office). On site interviews will take place then.
