1. Important Library Information, West Campus Libraries
All students (including doctoral candidates) must be registered for the Summer or Fall semester in order to qualify for Summer library borrowing privileges. After registering, it can take 24 to 36 hours for registration information to be reflected on your borrowing record. At that time, you may renew your material at the library or online.
All faculty and staff who currently have library materials checked out, must return them before May 19 or renew them online via their STARS account. Items that have been renewed more than three times must be returned. At that time, you will be able to check them back out if necessary.
All library patrons are responsible for checking their STARS accounts online to ensure that items have been properly renewed and that no materials are overdue. Patrons are liable for any library fines accrued.

2. Senior Leadership and Service Awards Nominations Now Being Accepted!
The Senior Leadership & Service Awards are given to graduating seniors who have made an outstanding contribution to campus life by making a difference in the lives of other Stony Brook Community members. NomOnly seniors who plan to graduate this calendar year (May, August, or December 2004) are eligible. Need a cum gpa of 2.5 and nominees must have demonstrated their leadership and/or service through tangible contributions to the University. Nominator's need to provide: Nominee's name, Solar ID Number, Campus Address, Permanent address, Academic Major, Co-curricular involvement, A statement indicating why the nominee should receive the Award. and Cumulative Grade Point Average. 1. Employee Assistance Program Lunchtime Learning, Empty Nest Syndrome
The term empty nest syndrome refers to the time of adjustment for parents when their children leave home, especially when the last child leaves home. This time is typically associated with stress, anxiety, identity crisis and heartache. This workshop will look at the top issues and challenges in the empty nest years. It will also give information and resources to help couples through the empty nest passage.

2. Employee Assistance Program Lunchtime Learning Adult Children Living at Home (2 Sessions)
You have a responsibility as a parent. But when does it end? How do you draw the line? Many parents are catering to adult children who won't leave home until their expectations for the "good life" are guaranteed. This workshop will address this issue with information and helpful suggestions.

Deciding when to retire is strictly personal but, "Will you still have a sense of purpose and meaning in retirement?". Have you developed hobbies and interests to pursue? Can you answer the question, "What will you do each day after you retire?". Retirement with a purpose inspires and challenges. This workshop will address topics such as how to make the transition from work to retirement and planning for a fruitful retirement.

John Yau, poet and art critic is the winner of a New York Foundation for the Arts 2003 award in poetry, and the Chevalier in the Order of Arts and Letters (French Ministry of Culture,) 2002. CEAS Deans Distinguished Lecture Series and Dept. of Technology & Society present Hal Abelson, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science @ MIT, Co-Director of the MIT-Microsoft Council on Educational Technology and Co-Head of the MIT Council on Educational Technology. Universities have a mission to create, preserve, and disseminate knowledge. In addressing that mission, we should take care to preserve and strengthen the intellectual commons - - the shared wellspring of ideas and innovation from which all may freely draw.
This talk describes initiatives aimed at bolstering the intellectual commons, both at MIT and elsewhere.

A mover and shaker of Asian American arts activism shares her poems and experiences of resistance and hope. Chiang is founder and former director of the Basement Workshop and a pioneer of Asian Studies in New York. 8. Blueprint for Gender Equity in Education Conference: Claiming the 21st Century
The fifth annual Blueprint for Gender Equity in Education Conference will be held on March 24th from 8-3:30 in the Student Activities Center. This year's conference will focus on the impact that individual activism can achieve, and will use interactive discussions and workshops to help participants hone the practical skills needed to create positive change. Stony Brook University students, faculty and staff are invited to register and attend, along with K-12 educators and students in grades 8-12. The event is sponsored by the Long Island Fund for Women and Girls, and co-sponsored by the University. They will also elaborate on the ways in which their countries, their people and their cultures have contributed to life in the United States. The presentations, moderated by Yacov Shamash will be followed by an Open forum with the audience and a reception.
A special performance by the Nippon Club Women's Chorus presenting a colorful repertoire of songs from Asia opens the symposium.

Symposium, dealing with Asian American contributions to struggles for social justice is sponsored by the Asian American Center Bridge and is being held this year in conjunction with the Annual Diversity Day Keynote Lecture sponsored by the Office of Affirmative Action and Diversity. This symposium is on the anniversary of the worst multi-racial uprising in recent U.S. History -- the L.A. Riots in the aftermath of the Rodney King ruling, or what is known in the Korean American community as the Sa-I-Gu (in Korean, literally, 4-29). Coco Fusco is sponsored by Women's Studies, and Angela Davis is sponsored by the President's Rotating Stars Program in Philosophy. This year's symposium is energized by student performances and music by the Social Justice Alliance and is dedicated to honoring the memory of William S. McAdoo.

Danielle Ofri, MD, PhD is Assistant Professor of Medicine at NYU School of Medicine. She is Editor-in-Chief of the Bellevue Literary Review and author of "Singular Intimacies: Becoming a Doctor at Bellevue." Her second book, Tools of the Trade, is forthcoming in 2005.

Donations Sought for the 1st Annual National Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis Center Fine Art and Antique Auction
The National Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis Center at Stony Brook University Hospital will be hosting its 1st Annual Fine Art and Antique Auction this fall. We are seeking donations of fine art, antiques and collectibles. These may include paintings, prints, sculptures, sterling silver items, small furniture, lighting, collectible glass, porcelain and pottery items, old toys and sporting goods, coins, jewelry, and anything old, unusual or collectible. All donations are tax deductible and proceeds will directly support the National Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis Center at Stony Brook University Hospital. 3. Philanthropic Partnership Creates the "Endless Wellness Children's Fund"
A new philanthropic partnership has been established between Stony Brook University Hospital and Christine Carlton, owner of T. Carlton's Studio and Spalon in St. James. This collaboration will allow the creation of the "Endless Wellness Children's Fund" to benefit children's services and programs at Stony Brook.
Stony Brook University Hospital receives twenty percent of the proceeds from sales of gift certificates in the University Hospital Auxiliary Gift Shop, as well as from special promotions on site. This state of the art salon offers beauty and wellness services for both men and women with special packages available for upcoming Mother's Day, Father's Day and graduation gifts.

You can help raise awareness about breast cancer among African Americans by participating in the walk-a-thon to raise dollars to support and expand the outreach programs of the Witness Project of LI - an awareness project of the LI Cancer Center at Stony Brook University, in collaboration with the Town of Babylon. Support new and ongoing research into the treatment and causes of breast cancer. The Walk is under 5 miles, with rest stops along the way, and begins at 9 AM at the Town of Babylon annex in North Babylon. 12. Senior Art Show To Open At Stony Brook
As commencement draws near, Stony Brook University proudly presents its annual exhibition of works by senior art majors. This year's show will be on view at the University Art Gallery in the Staller Center for the Arts from Tuesday, April 27 through Wednesday, May 19. A reception for the artists will be held on Saturday, May 8 from 7 to 9 pm.
The juried "Senior Show 2004" will include paintings, sculptures, ceramics, photographs, mixed media installations and works on paper, selected by faculty members of the Department of Art from among the best work of this year's graduating class.
University Art Gallery hours are Tuesday - Friday, noon to 4pm, and 7 to 9pm. The gallery will also be open one hour before the 8pm performance of the Emerson String Quartet Festival on Friday, May 7. ADMISSION IS FREE. 1. Long Island Database Project - Volunteers Needed
The Long Island Cancer Center is creating a database of blood samples and clinical information to help researchers better understand why some individuals develop breast and prostate cancer while others do not.
Women and men are eligible to participate if they were diagnosed with breast or prostate cancer OR have never been diagnosed with cancer, are 18 years of age or older, are a current Long Island resident and have lived on Long Island for at least 5 years.

2. Are You Depressed? We Can Help!
The Department of Psychology at Stony Brook University is conducting up to a 6 month clinical trial involving medication with all participants and the addition of psychotherapy with some. Must be willing to travel up to two times a week for up to 3 months to the site and be available late afternoons/early evenings. If you have been feeling depressed (sad, down) most of the time for at least two years, you may be eligible to participate. All evaluations and treatments will be provided free of charge. If you are the mother of a 4- to 8-year-old child, we need you! The Point of Woods Laboratory at Stony Brook University is conducting a research study. We want to know what moms think about why children behave the way they do. 2. Defensive Driving Program Offered for UUP Members and Their Immediate Family Members
A NYSUT sponsored Defensive Driving program is being offered for all UUP employees and their immediate family members on Monday, May 10, 2004 and Tuesday, May 11, 2004 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM in the SAC Room 305. Attendance at both classes is required for certification.
Cost is $25.00 per person. Checks should be made payable to "NYSUT Benefit Trust" and delivered to the UUP office, 104 Old Chemistry, Z=3475. Office hours are Monday thru Friday 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
Participants are usually entitled to a 10% discount on their automotive insurance. Check with your provider. The certificate is good for three years of savings!
