Renewal of your permit is Free. Your permit validator will be mailed directly to your home address (prior to the expiration date)provided that:
1. You have no outstanding summonses.
2. You are a current employee as indicated by Human Resource data.
3. Your home address is current with Human resources.
If you meet the three criteria, you will receive a new validator.
This is a holographic security sticker that will be placed on top of your current permit expiration date, therefore it is very important to keep your current permit!

2. Are you planning on using Blackboard this Spring?
We only load students into courses that have the Spring 04 designator on them. We do not load students into old courses. You must tell us if you are using Blackboard this Spring in order to ensure that your students have proper access.
Log into Blackboard. Do you see your Spring 2004 course listed there?
If not, what are you waiting for? The first day of school? Don't do that, you'll have to wait a long time!

3. Register Now for Stony Brook Day in Albany - February 24, 2004
On February 24, Stony Brook students, faculty, staff and alumni will journey up to our State Capital for one of the most important events of the year. It's Stony Brook Day in Albany, and we want you to come. You'll get a chance to celebrate Stony Brook - to let your legislators know what the University means to us. You'll have a chance to meet people from all parts of the campus and experience firsthand how our government works. There's even an end of day celebration. 5. Do you know a student who deserves some recognition?
The Alumni Association is sponsoring eight awards to students who have excelled in different areas, including academics, leadership, and the improvement of community life. Recipients will receive a plaque honoring their accomplishments, as well as a cash award. Please help us spread the word! Applications can be obtained from the Alumni Office. This is a comprehensive program which focuses on the competencies necessary to be an effective supervisor. 1. Organizational Alignment - A workshop that "brings it all together." We will review and work with the organizational mission statement, departmental mission statements. Participants will assess strengths and gaps within their individual areas and develop realistic plans for linking these organizational tools including unit action plans and individual performance plans. We will consider structure, human resources, and costs.

2. Stress Management Workshops
The Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of Family Medicine will be presenting a series of four workshops on stress management.
These workshops focus on meditation as a core experience for stress management. The group is introduced to several forms of meditation including breathing techniques, the stress relaxation response, mindfulness meditation, walking meditations, heart-centered meditations and others.
Other aspects of stress management discussed are sound nutrition, movement, sleep practices, time management and prioritization, awareness of thought patterns and related emotions.
Workshop dates are January 28, February 4, 11, 18, 2004 between 5:30 and 6:45 pm at 33 Research Way, East Setauket, NY.
Lower your stress and register early for this popular workshop since seating is limited to fifteen participants. The fee for the four sessions is $80.00 payable at first session.

3. Adobe Illustrator NCE 322 - 12 sessions - Fee: $575
Adobe Illustrator is the preferred program of designers, graphic artists, technical illustrators and business professionals around the world. Illustrator is considered to be the most powerful design tool for flexibility of drawing with pinpoint accuracy. Topics include: drawing and editing lines, curves and shapes, adding and deleting editing points, manipulating handles and curves and placing EPS, BMP, PCX and TIF formatted scans in your files. We will be working in the Windows environment. The required textbook addresses both Macintosh and Windows users. Cost of text is not included in the course fee. Textbook is Illustrator 10 Classroom in a Book from Adobe Press.

5. Defensive Driving Program Offered for UUP Employees and Their Immediate Family Members
A NYSUT sponsored Defensive Driving program is being offered on Monday, January 26 and Tuesday, January 27, 2004 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM in the SAC Room 305, for all UUP employees and their immediate family members. (Attendance at both sessions is required.)
Cost is $25 per person. Checks should be made payable to "NYSUT Benefit Trust" and delivered to the UUP office, 104 Old Chemistry, Z=3475. Office hours are Monday thru Friday, 9 am to 3 pm.
Participants are usually entitled to a 10% discount on their automotive insurance. Check with your provider. The certificate is good for three years of savings!

1. Long Island Database Project - Volunteers Needed
The Long Island Cancer Center is creating a database of blood samples and clinical information to help researchers better understand why some individuals develop breast and prostate cancer while others do not.
Women and men are eligible to participate if they were diagnosed with breast or prostate cancer OR have never been diagnosed with cancer, are 18 years of age or older, are a current Long Island resident and have lived on Long Island for at least 5 years.

1. 6th Annual Institute for Medicine in Contemporary Society Writing Contest Guest Judge: Danielle Ofri, MD and Author
All members of the SUNY community are welcome to enter, including students, faculty and staff from all departments on both sides of campus, and employees, staff, patients and families of patients of University Hospital.
Entries should be no longer than fifty lines, and prose no more than 2000 words. There is no limit to the number of entries any one person may submit. Submissions may NOT have been previously published in print or electronic format and must NOT be under consideration for publication anywhere else.
There will be two first prizes of $500 - one for best poetry and one for best prose entry.

3. Summer 2004 Undergraduate Research Internship Program
The Center for Biotechnology is accepting applications for Summer 2004 Undergraduate Research Internship Program. Internships will be established within the local biotechnology industry. Students will spend their summers, at a company, learning laboratory techniques and contributing to specific research projects. Students interested in careers in the biotechnology industry would be optimal candidates for selection as trainees under this program. Applicants will be selected from students beginning their junior or senior year who are majoring in any biology or chemistry department. Students in other life sciences departments, with equivalent but not exact qualifications as outlined in the application guidelines, are encouraged to contact Angeline Judex to discuss candidate eligibility. 4. 2004 Innovative Technology Development (ITD) Program - Call for Applications
The Center for Biotechnology is seeking applications for the 2004 Innovative Technology Development (ITD) Program. The program offers funding for commercially promising research in medical biotechnology, including research, diagnostic, or therapeutic products or devices. Funding is available to faculty for translational research on the academic campus. Applications must address commercialization potential and be consistent with the Centers' mission of economic development in NYS. New York State industry-matched, or Sensor CAT-matched, or SPIR-matched proposals are encouraged. All applications will be competitively reviewed for scientific, business, and intellectual property potential by academic and industry reviewers. We also seek projects that are complementary to, and collaborate with the Center's Applied Bioscience Laboratory or Custom Microarray Facility.
