2. HRS Training and Organizational Development presents "Putting Training to Work For You!"
August 10, 2004, 9:30 AM - 12:00 PM, Presented by Kevin C. Hauss, Manager, Training & Organizational Development
This program is geared for supervisors and managers. It will include the following:
A) Establishing your role in the process and actions you can take before sending your employee to training.
B) Preparing staff members for classes they are scheduled to attend.
C) Strategies for reinforcing, following up and encouraging the use of skills your members learned or enhanced at a class.
D) Continuing the staff development process on-the-job.
E) How to use retreats for: 1) Development of staff and department as a whole, 2) Reward/Recognition, and 3) Enjoyment
F) The strategy of integrating Development Plans into Performance Programs.
G) Mapping out timing element to "Make Time For Training".
H) Discussion of overall benefits of training to department and staff.

3. Blackboard Faculty Showcase - Wed. Aug 4th 1-2pm CELT, Library E1337
On Wednesday, August 4th, Stony Brook faculty will be demonstrating the various ways they use Blackboard, Stony Brook's Online Course management system.
This is an informal event, an opportunity for Blackboard instructors to share ideas and practices.

4. Volunteer Tutor Workshop Program
Are you interested in becoming a volunteer Tutor? The Stony Brook Adult Literacy Center is in need of volunteers to provide tutoring in basic skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing English). We provide tutoring services for adults who are at least 16 years of age and out of school, read and write at or below the sixth grade level, need to improve their basic English conversation skills and understanding of American culture.
Volunteers will attend a workshop here on campus that will prepare them for becoming a tutor.

2. Psychiatry and Personality Conference at Sony Brook University
Stony Brook will host a Conference on Biological Basis of Personality and Individual Differences, 8/13-15, here on campus. Seating is limited. LAST DAY TO REGISTER IS 8/2. There is no onsite registration. Open to all.
Presenters: 20 clinicians, geneticists, psychologists, and neuroscientists from the U.S., South America, Europe, and Australia.
Topics: mapping personality onto the brain, the biology of traits, genetic markers for individual differences and vulnerability towards psychopathology, functional neuroimaging approaches,human and animal personality.

Long Island is currently suffering from its WORST BLOOD SHORTAGE EVER! The next blood drives will be held in SAC Ballroom A on Tuesday and Wednesday from 11:00am to 4:30pm! All donors will receive a Loews movie ticket or Stony Brook Blood Drive T Shirt. Last year Stony Brook donated almost 2200 pints of blood, help us beat our record this year! 3. SBU Cat Network Needs Homes For Cats
The USB Cat Network works to humanely trap, neuter, vaccinate, and care for the many feral cats that live on campus. We have a some young cats captured on campus (no longer kittens) who are available to good homes. They are already vaccinated and spayed/neutered. 4. Habitat for HUmanity of Suffolk County Womens Blitz Build
Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk County "Womens Blitz Build"
Stony Brook University is proud to be a sponsor of the Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk County "Womens Blitz Build". One house will be built in one week in August, entirely by women, for a single mom and her daughter. Scheduled to take place August 23-28, 2004, with the house dedication on August 30, there will be two shifts of volunteers each day. Complete the registration form below and return it to C. Spinning Classes- Summer Specialty Class
The Department of Campus Recreation will be holding a specialty class for 6 weeks. Beginning August - September Spinning will be offered in the Student Activity Center Lower Level Studio II on Thursdays and Fridays.
These classes are a separate fee from the regular fitness class schedule.

Merck & Co. is conducting a clinical trial studying the safty and efficacy of an investigational medication for the prevention of prostate cancer. If you are a man over the age of 50, with a normal PSA test, consider participating in a 6-year research study. The Health Sciences Library has free trial access to FIRSTConsult from July-September 2004. FIRSTConsult is a highly innovative, evidence-based clinical information tool for primary health care providers, part of the MD Consult Clinical Knowledge System. It offers tools for differential diagnosis, evaluation and management of medical conditions, patient education and procedure skills review, and synthesizes findings from journals and other respected references into a templated knowledge base that is organized into a highly accessible format and designed for use at the time and point of care.
