3. West Campus Libraries And Blackboard Join Efforts To Offer Electronic Reserves
SBU Libraries, West Campus, is pleased to announce a new Electronic Reserves service for the Spring 2005 semester. Documents selected by faculty will be digitized by library staff, in accordance with Fair Use and other copyright guidelines, and centrally managed through the Blackboard system.
Faculty must first request an E-Reserves course in Blackboard. Once the course has been created, documents are requested through an on-line form on the Reserves webpage, and library Reserve staff will add them to your E-Reserves Blackboard course.

2. Lawson Requisition Training(HTNW27)- for Hospital Employees in the HSC-(9 am-12 pm) 12/9 and 12/21
This workshop is designed to take you through the process of entering various types of procurement requisitions in the Lawson system including: Entering, changing, and deleting Stores and Vendor requisitions; Adding another page of items; Adding Comments to a requisition; Checking for approvals; Finding a purchase order number for a requisition; Inquiring on a purchase order; Finding receipts for a purchase order; Inquiring on requisitions; Inquiring on a budget; and Blanket Order releases. All Lawson users must attend this course to obtain a user ID & password. 3. Empowering Clients Through Self Help And Social Support: A Model For Group Workers
The School of Social Welfare and the Association for Advancements of Social Work with Groups, Inc. Long Island Chapter is sponsoring this program. The program will discuss the use of mutual aid and social support groups in enhancing the quality of life for chronic mentally ill individuals. The Program will be held on Tuesday December 7, 2004 from 10:00 to 11:30 am at the Stduent Activities Center - Ballroom B. The program is free to students, field instructors, faculty and staff. 6. "The Renaissance Courtesans' Sung Capital" - a talk by Bonnie Gordon
Bonnie Gordon, Assistant Professor of Music, will deliver the fourth talk in the Feminist Campus Colloquia on Thursday, December 2 at 4:30 pm in the Humanities Institute, Melville Library, E4340. Her paper argues that in the Italian Renaissance, song could alter the power dynamic between a courtesan and her patron, thus disrupting bodily and social orders. Professor Gordon is author of Monteverdi's Unruly Women (Cambridge 2004) and co-editor of The Courtesans' Arts (forthcoming from Oxford). FCC speakers for Spring 2005 include: February 17, Anne Moyer (Psychology); March 3, Christa Erickson (Art); and April 7, Ritch Calvin (Women's Studies). All talks will be held at 4:30 in the HISB and are sponsored by HISB and Women's Studies.

10. Distinguished Lecture in Computer Science: Hari Balakrishnan
The Computer Science Department welcomes everyone to its Distinguished Lecture Series, sponsored by Citigroup and the Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology.
Professor Hari Balakrishnan (MIT) will speak about "Location-Aware Mobile and Sensor Computing" at 2:15pm on Friday, December 3, in Computer Science 2311.
Professor Balakrishnan is the recipient of an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship (2002), a National Science Foundation CAREER Award (2000), the ACM doctoral dissertation award for his work on reliable data transport over wireless networks (1998), and several best paper awards including the 2004 IEEE Communications Society's William R. Bennett Prize. He was awarded the Ruth and Joel Spira Award for Distinguished Teaching in 2001, the Junior Bose Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2002 from the MIT School of Engineering, and MIT's prestigious Edgerton faculty achievement award for distinction in research and teaching in 2003.

"Sweet Dreams" chocolate and dessert tasting event will be held at the Watermill Caterers in Smithtown on Monday, January 31st from 7-9PM. This event will benefit the Matt and Debra Cody Center for Autism at Stony Brook University Hospital. 5. Legendary singer-songwriter Eric Andersen to appear at Stony Brook's University Cafe on Sunday, December 5th at 2 P.M.
For the past thirty years, Eric Andersen's songs and voice have helped define and interpret the times. One of the artists like Bob Dylan and Tom Paxton who emerged from the Greenwich Village folk scene in the 1960's, Andersen's career moved in directions that saw him producing classic albums like 1972's Blue River, Ghosts Upon The Road, in 1989, and Memories of the Future (1998)You Can't Relieve the Past (2000)and Beat Avenue (2002).
His new CD, The Street Was Always There (2004), revives and rearranges songs by Village compatriots of the sixties (Dylan, Paxton, Fred Neil, and Tim Hardin among them.) The title track is a new Eric Andersen song .
Opening for Eric Andersen is Stony Brook's own Glenn Jochum, whose most recent CD is Nasty Weather.

7. New York City Gay Men's Chorus comes to Stony Brook
The LGBT Faculty & Staff Network at Stony Brook University announces the establishment of the Pride Scholarship Endowment.

1. Osteoporosis Prevention and Management
The Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of Family Medicine is offering a series of three group visits for the prevention and management of osteoporosis.
Participants will be evaluated individually in order to assess osteoporosis severity.
The groups will also discuss osteoporosis in an integrative, holistic fashion with focus on measures that may be added to conventional treatment such as nutrition with whole foods, supplements, yoga, and exercises to improve hip and spine bone density. Conventional monitoring techniques and medical intervention with hormone replacement therapy and drugs will be covered as well.
The series of three, two-hour sessions will be conducted on 12/1, 12/9, 12/15, between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. at 33 Research Way, Stony Brook Technology Park.
Most insurance plans are accepted with appropriate co-pay. For those without coverage, the cost for the series is $150.00.

Dr. Daniel O'Leary and Ms. Shiri Cohen from the University Marital Clinic are looking for couples to participate in a therapy study. If you are married or cohabitating with a partner, and one of you is currently feeling depressed, you may be eligible to receive a free, 5-week couples treatment to help you and your partner learn more about depression and ways to cope with the stress you may be facing. 2. Treatment Study for Children's Behavioral Control Problems
The Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Stony Brook University is conducting a study of treatment steps for children, ages 6 to 14, who have attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder plus other behavioral control problems (aggression, explosiveness, low frustration tolerance, etc.). Eligible children receive free evaluation and study treatment, including medication and help with behavioral support strategies. The study is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health.

3. The Wo/Men's Center Open Hour - Expanded Library
The Wo/Men's Center is now hosting an on-going "Open Hour" for all students, staff, or faculty. For one hour each day, stop by for free coffee and candy. The Wo/Men's Center has a newly expanded library, in an opening and inviting atmosphere. Guests are welcome to take out books or just relax. Located in the Student Union Room 221.
