02. Hosp/HSC Admin Announcements

1. National Hospital Week Activities

All employees are invited to National Hospital Week events.
Healthcare information will be offered, including blood pressure, glucose, osteoporosis screenings and others. Visit Tuesday, May 18, 11 am-2 pm at the Galleria, HSC, level 3 for screenings, displays, raffles, etc. A lunch cart will be available.
Screenings and displays are scheduled for Tech Park, 31 Research Way, on Friday, May 21, 11 am - 2 pm and at the center of the Smithhaven Mall, Wednesday, May 19, 10 am-7 pm for the public. Other activities include a blood drive, Wednesday, May 12, noon - 8 pm at the Blood Bank, level 5. Donations can also be made during Hospital Week, May 17-23. University Police will conduct safety checks for infant/child car seats, Tuesday, May 11, 7am - 11am at the Stony Brook Child Care Center. 1. Dr. Eric Gouaux, HHMI Investigator from Columbia University to give a Seminar for the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior

On Thursday, May 13th, the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior will host a Seminar, given by Dr. Eric Gouaux, from Columbia University. Dr. Gouaux's talk: "Structure and Function of the AMPA and NMDA Families of Ionotropic Glutamate Receptors" will take place at 12 Noon in Room 038 of the Life Sciences Building.

Ferretti, MD, Clinical Associate Professor, and Susan Aiello, NP, of the Department of Radiology will be guests on the WLIE, 540 AM, Live Broadcast Radio Show "Healthy Inspirations" with Dr. Karin Burkard. The discussion will center around Uterin Fibroid Disease and Uterine Artery Embolization.

The Summer Camp at Stony Brook invites you to celebrate our fabulous fifth anniversary! Join us in an adventurous camp experience that will mesmerize your child. Our Camp combines a special mixture of recreational and educational activities for children between the ages of 5 -12. 2. LAST CHANCE! The 11th Annual Stony Brook Child Care Cash Bonanza Win $15,000

Stony Brook Child Care will hold it's 11th annual Child Care Cash Bonanza on Thursday, May 13th, 2004 and will be held at the Student Activity Center. Tickets are $50.00 each and they may be purchased at the child care center or Bursar's office. The Hospital will be selling tickets May 10-13th from 11-2pm. 3. 2004 Stony Brook Girls Soccer Camp - July 19th to 23rd

The Stony Brook Women's Soccer Staff and Team would like to invite girls between the ages of 7 and 16 to their summer soccer camp. There will be two sessions that will run the week of July 19th to 23rd. The day session will run from 9:00am to 3:30pm for players between the ages of 7 to 16. The evening session will run from 4:30pm to 7:30pm for players between the ages of 11 and 16. We have three separate programs to meet the needs of players of all ages and abilities. The players will have two training sessions per day as well as one small-sided and one full-sided game, daily. The players will receive a camp T-shirt and an official SBU soccer ball. 5. Conky celebrates 20 years at Stony Brook Child Care. Join Benedict and SBCCSI alumni for a Potluck Celebration.

6. Senior Art Show To Open At Stony Brook

As commencement draws near, Stony Brook University proudly presents its annual exhibition of works by senior art majors. This year's show will be on view at the University Art Gallery in the Staller Center for the Arts from Tuesday, April 27 through Wednesday, May 19. A reception for the artists will be held on Saturday, May 8 from 7 to 9 pm.
The juried "Senior Show 2004" will include paintings, sculptures, ceramics, photographs, mixed media installations and works on paper, selected by faculty members of the Department of Art from among the best work of this year's graduating class.
University Art Gallery hours are Tuesday - Friday, noon to 4pm, and 7 to 9pm. The gallery will also be open one hour before the 8pm performance of the Emerson String Quartet Festival on Friday, May 7. ADMISSION IS FREE. 7. Jazz Jazz Jazz - The Annual Usb Jazz Department Fundraiser/Party Saturday May 15Th.

8. Campus Recreation Coed Summer Softball League Now Forming

The Department of Campus Recreation Coed Summer Softball League is now forming. Registration Deadline is May 28th. League will run from June 7 - Aug. 5. Games will be played at 5:30pm & 6:45pm. Teams will consist of at least nine people (4 women minimum) on the field at all times. Registration Fee is $175.00/team. Games will be played on Tues/Thurs. 1. Summer Sessions Welcomes Visiting Students

Stony Brook's Summer Sessions Classes are open to visiting students from other colleges and universities. In addition, high school juniors who have grade point averages of 85 or higher may enroll in one freshman-level course in Summer Session II (July 12-August 20). Students can select from more than 350 undergraduate courses in Summer 2004, with day and evening classes in all sessions. 1. Long Island Database Project - Volunteers Needed

The Long Island Cancer Center is creating a database of blood samples and clinical information to help researchers better understand why some individuals develop breast and prostate cancer while others do not.
Women and men are eligible to participate if they were diagnosed with breast or prostate cancer OR have never been diagnosed with cancer, are 18 years of age or older, are a current Long Island resident and have lived on Long Island for at least 5 years.

2. MRI Study of Flow in the Brain and Spine

Volunteers are needed to participate in an MRI study to investigate new methods for imaging flow patterns of blood and cerebrospinal fluid in the brain and spine. The goal of the study is to understand flow patterns in healthy individuals in order to compare these results with the abnormal flow patterns seen in individuals with diseases such as hydrocephalus and spinal cysts. For the current phase of studies, we are seeking healthy individuals with no previous history of head or spinal trauma, arachnoid or spinal cysts, hydrocephalus, brain tumors or any contraindication for an MRI exam. The study will involve 1 hour of your time and be completely non-invasive. No injections will be given. You will not be paid for this study.

There will be a retirement party for Kenny Nugent. It will be held at J & R's Steak House located in the Coventry Commons in Stony Brook on Wednesday May 12, 2004 from 6:00p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The cost is $35.00 per person. After 31 years of service Detective Jeanette Hotmer is retiring from SUNY Stony Brook Police Department. Please join us in wishing her a long, happy and healthy retirement at a party being held in her honor.
