1. New WIC Program in the Department of Family Medicine

WIC is a supplemental nutrition program for women, infants and children. Women must be pregnant, breastfeeding (up to 1 year) or postpartum (up to 6 months) and children must be under the age of 5. The program's goal is to provide nutrition education and WIC checks to participants in order to purchase specific WIC foods. WIC foods include infant cereal and formula, milk, juice, eggs, cheese, cereal, beans, peanut butter, carrots and tuna fish. All participants must meet income guidelines (185% of the poverty level) or be enrolled in an adjunctive eligible program such as Medicaid, TANF, Head Start, free/reduced school lunch, etc. Please call the WIC program for more information @ 444-5239.

1. Tutor Training Workshop (Stony Brook Adult Literacy Center)

Are you interested in becoming a volunteer Tutor? The Stony Brook Adult Literacy Center is in need of volunteers to provide tutoring in basic skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing English). We provide tutoring services for adults who are at least 16 years of age and out of school, read and write at or below the sixth grade level, need to improve their basic English conversation skills and understanding of American culture.
Volunteers will attend a workshop here on campus that will prepare them for becoming a tutor.

Since your mail file size is limited, you must constantly manage the documents in it. You should delete the mail you don't need and "archive" the mail that you may need access to again in the future. To learn how to do this attend the "Getting Organized With Lotus Notes" class.

2. Psychiatry and Personality Conference at Stony Brook University

Stony Brook will host a Conference on Biological Basis of Personality and Individual Differences, 8/13-15, here on campus. Seating is limited. LAST DAY TO REGISTER IS 8/2. There is no onsite registration. Open to all.

2. Faculty and Staff Welcome Wagon Volunteers for Opening 2004

The Division of Campus Residences invites you to be a part of Welcome Wagon 2004
The Welcome Wagon program is designed to welcome the incoming class of first year students who will move onto campus on Friday, August 27, 2004 between 9 am and 3 pm. Over 300 student volunteers will welcome the first year students, answer their questions, and assist them in moving their belongings into the residence halls.
We are actively seeking the participation of faculty and staff in this effort. In the past, faculty and staff who have volunteered have been particularly helpful in answering questions and providing information to students, parents, and family members.
Faculty/Staff who wish to volunteer may select a location and number of hours they wish participate.

3. Can You Contribute 15 Minutes A Day To Help Feed Homeless Cats On Campus?

The SBU Cat Network works to humanely trap, neuter, vaccinate, and care for the many feral cats that live on campus. Our strength is is the little contributions of a number of concerned members of the campus community. 4. EMERGENCY Stony Brook University Fall Blood Drives - 7/27/04 and 7/28/04

Long Island is currently suffering from its WORST BLOOD SHORTAGE EVER! The next blood drives will be held in SAC Ballroom A on Tuesday and Wednesday from 11:00am to 4:30pm! 5. Womens' Blitz Build for Habitat for Humanity!

Stony Brook University is proud to be a participating sponsor of Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk County Womens Blitz Build. 1. Campus Recreation Coed Volleyball Tournament

The Department of Campus Recreation is now accepting registration for our one-day Coed Volleyball Tournament to be held on Tuesday, July 20th in the Pritchard Gymnasium. Teams will consist of at least six players (minimum 3 women) on the court at all times. Tournament will run from 5:15pm - 8:30pm. Registration Fee is $80.00/team. All games will be played in one night. Registration deadline is July 16th. Only students, faculty & staff of the University are eligible participate. 2. CSEA Annual Picnic - July 24, 2004 - Rain Or Shine

The Annual CSEA Picnic will be held on Saturday, July 24, 2004 from noon until 5:00 p.m. at the Robinson Estate, 184 Main Street, Center Moriches. Ticket prices are $6.00 for members, $8.00 for guests and children 4 and under are free. Their will be food, beer, soda, a pool, raffle prizes, games and more. 3. 2004 Summer Girls Lacrosse Clinic Series

The Seawolves Women's Lacrosse Team is offering 3 Girls Lacrosse Clinics this summer on July 1, July 22, August 11, 2004 from 3:45- 8:00 PM. SB faculty and staff will receive a $10.00 discount. The Seawolves Girls Lacrosse Clinics are designed specifically for girls and young women who want to take their game to the next level. Staffed by experienced coaches who are familiar with the women's game on the collegiate level, the clinics combine basic and advanced skill instruction, offensive and defensive strategies, and game experiences to help players put it all together. 4. Charles Gordon Heuser Memorial Golf Classic

This is the last week to sign up for the Charles Gordon Heuser Memorial Golf Classic, which benefits the Charles Gordon Heusuer Endowment Scholarship and the General Athletic Scholarship Fund. This event will take place on Monday, July 26th at the Port Jefferson Country Club. The cost per golfer is $250, which includes 18 holes of golf, a gift package, and the awards dinner at Lombardi's on the Sound. 2. Participants Needed for Brain Simulation Study of Emotion and Personality

Qualified participants
- must be at least 18 years of age
- have no history of seizures, stroke, and head trauma.
- Not pregnant
- Do not currently take tricyclic anti-depressants or neuroleptic medication
- Other exclusion criteria apply.
Subjects will be compensated $25.00 per hour (approx. 1-2 hours).

3. Seeking Volunteers for a Cancer Study

We are seeking to identify new cancer markers in blood, tissue and body fluids. This may allow us to develop laboratory tests which can diagnose cancers earlier and/or identify patients who are at risk for a poor outcome and who may benefit from more aggressive therapy than is normally recommended.

7. Did You Ever Wonder Why Some People Get Stressed Out More Easily Than Others?

Stress can affect the brain, heart, hormones, and mental performance.
We are looking for men and women, 18-50 years of age, to participate in a non-invasive study.
Participation in this protocol requires that volunteers be free on two consecutive weekdays including two hospital overnights
For example: Sunday night to Tuesday afternoon, or Tuesday night to Thursday afternoon
You will be free to pursue your normal activities after 4:15 pm, but you will need to be back for the overnight stay.
COMPENSATION: $200.00

12. Are You A Type I Insulin-Dependant Diabetic?

We are conducting a study to determine whether periodontal treatment can reduce specific markers of infection/inflammation that may make it more difficult for you and your physician to control diabetes.
Study participants will receive a free periodontal cleaning and payment up to $300.00

13. Select - Selenium And Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial.

SELECT is a research study being conducted to see if prostate cancer can be prevented.
Men who participate in this study will take two capsules a day. Some men will take only selenium or vitamin E and some will take both. Others will take a placebo (sugar capsule).
Participants will visit their local study site twice a year for at least seven years, and no more than twelve years. About 32,000 men will take part in this study.
Men free of prostate cancer who are age 55 or older may be able to take part in this study. African-American men may join at age 50 or older.
Taking part in SELECT may not help you directly. But we hope that the information learned from this study will benefit your sons, grandsons, and future generations.

14. Alzheimer's Disease Trial At SUNY Stony Brook.

A Trial of Zocor (an anti-cholesterol medication) to slow the Progression of Alzheimer's Disease. All eligible participants with mild-moderate AD would remain on their current AD treatments, while participating in this trial.
