02. Hosp/HSC Admin Announcements

1. Infection Control 2003 training - Are you non-compliant?

Infection Control 2003 training is required of all clinical employees of Stony Brook University Hospital and has been sent to all staff. People Soft Data sheets were to be returned to the Healthcare Epidemiology office. If you have attended Nursing, Nursing Staff Support and/or Support Services Recertification programs you have received Infection Control annual training at the recertification training. You do not need to additionally participate in reading the training booklets and returning the PeopleSoft data sheet.
For those who have not attended recertification, all completed data sheets should be returned as soon as possible (if already not done) to Healthcare Epidemiology, Hosp. L1-716, Zip=7018 via inter-hospital mail no later than January 31, 2004 in order to be processed and documented in a timely fashion for JCAHO annual compliance.

2. Anger Management - An Overview, January 29, 2004, 11:30-12:30, HSC, Seminar Room 2B, Level 2

Angry? Who Me? This workshop will teach you techniques on how to manage your own anger and how to deal with another person's anger. Participants will identify types of triggers to anger, learn behavioral signs and symptoms of anger and role-play constructive ways to handle anger.

"President Kenny invites students, faculty, and staff to attend a Presidential Lecture by Joyce Roche, entrepreneur, mentor, and corporate executive, entitled, "Are We There Yet?". Stony Brook is pleased to present our fabulous fifth anniversary! Join us in an adventurous camp experience that will mesmerize your child. Our Camp combines a unique twist of educational activities and athletics for children between the ages of 5 -12. 3. National Girls and Women in Sports Day Youth Sports Clinic

The Athletic Department will be conducting a FREE Youth (boys & girls ages 6-11) Sports Clinic for National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Saturday, Febuary 7 from 10:30 am to 1 pm. Following the clinic, there will be lunch and goodies for the participants. All participants are invited to attend Women's basketball game vs. UMBC at 2pm. 4. Staller Center 2004 Spring Semester Movie Passes Available

Friday, January 30 starts off the Staller Center Film Series.

5. UUP Annual Dinner Dance

The Annual UUP Dinner Dance, a joint venture with the Core Campus and the HSC, will be held this year on Friday, February 13, 2004 at the Meadow Club in Port Jefferson Station. All UUP'ers are invited to attend. Enjoy an evening of delicious food, a DJ for dancing and really great door prizes. There will be a cash bar. 2. Defensive Driving Program Offered for UUP Employees and Their Immediate Family Members

A NYSUT sponsored Defensive Driving program is being offered on Monday, January 26 and Tuesday, January 27, 2004 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM in the SAC Room 305, for all UUP employees and their immediate family members. (Attendance at both sessions is required.)
Cost is $25 per person. Checks should be made payable to "NYSUT Benefit Trust" and delivered to the UUP office, 104 Old Chemistry, Z=3475. Office hours are Monday thru Friday, 9 am to 3 pm.
Participants are usually entitled to a 10% discount on their automotive insurance. Check with your provider. The certificate is good for three years of savings!

FREE Reiki Healing Circle. Energize your day with a meditation, and a Reiki healing treatment.
Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is an ancient Tibetan healing art that dates back nearly three thousand years. It is a hands-on method that uses Universal Energy to heal and return to balance elements of the body, mind and spirit. It is not a religion, nor does it require a belief system to work. It is a powerful yet gentle healing technique.

6. Stress Management Workshops

The Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of Family Medicine will be presenting a series of four workshops on stress management.
These workshops focus on meditation as a core experience for stress management. The group is introduced to several forms of meditation including breathing techniques, the stress relaxation response, mindfulness meditation, walking meditations, heart-centered meditations and others.
Other aspects of stress management discussed are sound nutrition, movement, sleep practices, time management and prioritization, awareness of thought patterns and related emotions.
Workshop dates are january 28, february 4, 11, 18, 2004 between 5:30 and 6:45 pm at 33 Research Way, East Setauket, NY.
Lower your stress and register early for this popular workshop since seating is limited to fifteen participants. The fee for the four sessions is $80.00 payable at first session.

1. Long Island Database Project - Volunteers Needed

The Long Island Cancer Center is creating a database of blood samples and clinical information to help researchers better understand why some individuals develop breast and prostate cancer while others do not.
Women and men are eligible to participate if they were diagnosed with breast or prostate cancer OR have never been diagnosed with cancer, are 18 years of age or older, are a current Long Island resident and have lived on Long Island for at least 5 years.

3. 2004 Black History Month Opening Ceremony Honoring Dr. William McAdoo

The campus community and friends are invited to participate in Black History Month, which is dedicated to Dr. William McAdoo, former chair of the Afrikana Studies Department. The Opening Ceremony, which also is dedicated to Dr. McAdoo, will be held on Wednesday, January 28th, 12:40 - 2:10pm in the Student Activiites Center Auditorium. The program will highlight his life, contributions to Stony Brook University, and include expressions of appreciation from members of the University community. A campus-wide celebration of Dr. McAdoo's life is planned for later this Spring. Please encourage other students, faculty, staff, and friends to attend this special event.
