3. Health Insurance Fair For West Campus/Hsc State And Research Foundation Employees Eligible For Health Insurance
A hot topic for all Americans is health insurance coverage. SUNY and the Research Foundation provide its employees with several excellent health plans and the opportunity each year to transfer from one plan to another.
The Health Insurance Transfer Period begins on October 15 for Research Foundation employees and November 1 for State employees. West Campus Human Resource Services/Benefits Section is sponsoring a Health Insurance Transfer Period Fair on Thursday, October 28, 2004 in the Wang Center, Main Lobby from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Please come and meet with the health insurance representatives for the most updated information and join us for dessert! You can find more information about the Fair on our website under Human Resource Services www.stonybrook.edu/hr.
The transfer period does not apply to graduate student employees.

Please be aware that Staples Business Advantage has slightly increased the cost of certain copy papers due to the market conditions of manufacturing paper. A three percent cost increase takes affect on October 18, 2004 for the following papers: all Staples Red Box, Hammermill CopyPlus and Pastel Colored Papers. This workshop is designed to take you through the process of entering various types of procurement requisitions in the Lawson system including: Entering, changing, and deleting Stores and Vendor requisitions; Adding another page of items; Adding Comments to a requisition; Checking for approvals; Finding a purchase order number for a requisition; Inquiring on a purchase order; Finding receipts for a purchase order; Inquiring on requisitions; Inquiring on a budget; and Blanket Order releases. All Lawson users must attend this course to obtain a user ID & password. Lecture by: Collins O. Airhihenbuwa, PhD, MPH, Professor in the Department of Behavioral Health at the Pennsylvania State University.
This lecture will focus on the intersection of imperialism and patriarchy in silencing African women's voices in their own health and well-being. The presentation will be anchored on the location of HIV/AIDS in the representation of African women, and the construction of their identity. Where: CELT (the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching) on the first floor of Melville Library
Early Medical Education (EME) is a program for under-represented minority, educationally disadvantaged, or financially disadvantaged undergraduate premedical students.
Once accepted into the EME program, as long as a student meets the academic and pre-professional test (i.e., MCAT ) standards maintained by the program, the student has an acceptance to the SUNY Downstate College of Medicine.

Presenter: Wen-Tien Chen, PhD

Dr Chen is a member of the Department of Medicine/Medical Oncology at Stony Brook since 1998. He is widely recognized for his expertise in the ultrastructure and function of cancer cells during the invasive process. He has received extensive funding and over 20 independent grants from major cancer research agencies over the past 18 years. Dr Chen obtained his PhD degree from Yale University. He rose to the position of tenured Professor of Cell Biology at Georgetown University in 1992. He has been selected to head the Cancer Angiogenesis & Metastasis Program at the SUNY-affiliated Cancer Institute of Long Island.

3. The March of Dimes First Annual Preterm Labor Awareness Network (PLAN CONFERENCE)
The Long Island Division of the March of Dimes in collaboration with the Regional Perinatal Center at Stony Brook University Hospital and the Suffolk County Department of Health is please to present The "First Annual Preterm Labor Awareness Network Conference". The goal of the conference is to create a forum to exchange ideas and information about the new paradigm of preterm birth as a "common complex disorder". Topics to be addressed include; the epidemiology of prematurity, pathophysiologic pathways that lead to preterm labor, strategies to treat preterm labor and recent research in the area. College Bowl Campus Tournament 2004 is coming November 3 & 4, 2004 7--11pm, SAC Aud. It is the world famous game of questions and answers played by two teams of competing students. We are need for judges, scorekeepers and moderators for this event. Last year our Stony Brook team made it to Nationals and we are seeking to return. 2. Stress Management Workshop
The Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of Family Medicine will be presenting a series of four workshops on stress management.
These workshops focus on meditation as a core experience for stress management. The group is introduced to several forms of meditation including breathing techniques, the stress relaxation response, mindfulness meditation, walking meditations, heart-centered meditations and others.
Other aspects of stress management discussed are sound nutrition, movement, sleep practices, time management and prioritization, awareness of thought patterns and related emotions.
Workshop dates are Wednesday, October 20, November 3, 10, 17, 2004 between 5:30 and 6:45 pm at 33 Research Way, East Setauket, NY.

5. Defensive Driving Program Offered for UUP employees and their immediate family members.

1. Alzheimer's Disease Trial At SUNY Stony Brook.
A Trial of Zocor (an anti-cholesterol medication) to slow the Progression of Alzheimer's Disease. All eligible participants with mild-moderate AD would remain on their current AD treatments, while participating in this trial.

Research Study at the General Clinical Research Center, University Hospital.

3. Select - Selenium And Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial.
SELECT is a research study being conducted to see if prostate cancer can be prevented.
Men who participate in this study will take two capsules a day. Some men will take only selenium or vitamin E and some will take both. Others will take a placebo (sugar capsule).
Participants will visit their local study site twice a year for at least seven years, and no more than twelve years. About 32,000 men will take part in this study.
Men free of prostate cancer who are age 55 or older may be able to take part in this study. African-American men may join at age 50 or older.
Taking part in SELECT may not help you directly. But we hope that the information learned from this study will benefit your sons, grandsons, and future generations.

9. Did You Ever Wonder Why Some People Get Stressed Out More Easily Than Others?
Stress can affect the brain, heart, hormones, and mental performance.
We are looking for men and women, 18-50 years of age, to participate in a non-invasive study.
Participation in this protocol requires that volunteers be free on two consecutive weekdays including two hospital overnights
For example: Sunday night to Tuesday afternoon, or Tuesday night to Thursday afternoon
