1. Spring Semester 2006 Tuition Waiver Program

The application for the B140w Tuition Waiver Program is now available to all full-time Research Foundation employees and all full-time west campus/HSC State employees. Please check the West Campus Benefits website under State or Research Foundation for complete information about the program. An application may be requested by calling the West Campus Benefits office at 2-6167 or 2-6136; please include your departmental zip code with your request.

2. It's time to renew your library material.

Faculty, Management Confidential and Professional staff who currently have borrowed library material from the Main, Music and/or the Science/Engineering Library, with a due date of December 22, 2005 are urged to renew at this time. The new due date, after properly renewing, will be May 16, 2006.
For information on how to renew via STARS/OPAC, please go to the URL.
To renew in person, please present your ID card to service desk staff. It is not necessary to bring the material into the library in order to have them renewed. There are no phone renewals. There is a three time renewal limit per book. Thank you.

1. Topics in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Seminar, December 7, 2005

Professor Christian Franzke from the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University, will present a seminar entitled, "Systematic Stochastic Mode Reduction for Climate," on Wednesday, December 7. The one-hour seminar begins at 12:00 p.m. at the Marine Sciences Research Center, South Campus, Endeavour Hall 120. Light refreshments will be served. 3. Neurobiology and Behavior Seminar, Thursday, December 8th, Michael Salter, M.D., Ph.D Speaker

On Thursday, December 8th,at 12 Noon in Room 038 of the Life Sciences Building, the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior will host a seminar given by Michael Salter, M.D., Ph.D, of the University of Toronto. The title of Dr. Salter's talk is: "Microglia-neuron signaling: plasticity of inhibition in neuropathic pain."

5. Distinguished Lecture in Computer Science: Hector Garcia-Molina

The Computer Science Department welcomes everyone to its Distinguished Lecture Series, sponsored by Citigroup and the Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology.
Professor Hector Garcia-Molina (Stanford University) will speak about "Generic Entity Resolution" at 2:15pm on Thursday, December 8, in Computer Science 2311.
Professor Garcia-Molina's research interests include distributed computing systems, digital libraries, and database systems. He was the chairman of the Stanford Computer Science Department and a member of the President's Information Technology Advisory Committee (PITAC) from 2001 to 2004. From 1979 to 1991, he was a faculty in the Computer Science Department at Princeton University. He received a BS in Electrical Engineering from the Instituto Tecnologico de Monterrey, Mexico, and a PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University. Garcia-Molina is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery, is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and has received the 1999 ACM SIGMOD Innovations Award.

Sarah Ferguson is a 2005 New York Foundation for the Arts recipient of an award for excellence for drawing and printmaking. Featuring the New York City Gay Mens Chorus
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Faculty, Staff Network at Stony Brook University is hosting the Holiday Pride Concert on Saturday, December 10, at 8:00 p.m. in the Student Activities Center Auditorium to benefit the Pride Scholarship Endowment.

1. Faculty Exhibition at University Art Gallery at Staller Center

Recent paintings, sculptures, mixed media electronic installations, and works on paper by 16 faculty members in Stony Brook's Department of Art will be exhibited at the University Art Gallery in the Staller Center through Wednesday, December 14. 3. Bus Trip to Atlantic City on President's Day, February 20th

The Employee Activities Council is running a bus trip to the Tropicana Hotel in Atlantic City on Presidents' Day, Feb. 20, 2006. The cost is $25 per person, with $5 cash back at the casino. 5. Folk/Pop Troubadour Ellis Paul to appear at The University Cafe Sunday, December 11th at 2 P.M.

Ellis Paul stands at the top of today's acoustic music scene, with a brilliant new CD, American Jukebox Fables, adding to an impressive collection of nine other releases. An Ellis Paul performance is memorable for his delivery of old favorites like "The World Ain't Slowin Down" (featured on a movie soundtrack) and new songs with incredible passion and feeling. 7. 5th Annual Festival of Lights, Wednesday, December 7, 2005, 6:30pm - 8:30pm, Student Activities Center Lobby and Auditorium

The holiday season is a wonderful time of year, filled with celebrations that reflect the rich traditions of people of different cultural backgrounds, faiths, and religious beliefs. To celebrate this season, several University departments and student organizations have come together to bring you the Festival of Lights, an intercultural program where our diverse campus community can further appreciate the cultural significance of our most widely observed holidays: Ramadan and Eid ul-Fitr (Muslim), Hanukah (Jewish), Winter Solstice (Native American), Christmas (Christian), Kwanzaa (African American), Diwali (Hindu), and the Enlightenment of Buddha (Buddhism). Each celebration is characterized here with interpretation, song, dance, displays, and traditional holiday foods.

8. SBU Jazz Concerts Monday And Thursday!

Stony Brook University's jazz ensembles will be performing on December 5th and December 8th, 2005, at The Staller Center for the Arts Recital Hall. Both concerts are at 8 p.m.
On Monday, Dec. 5th, three different jazz combos will perform a wide variety of works from around the world. Composers include W.C. Handy, Caetano Veloso, Duke Ellington, Jobim and Benny Moten as well as professor Ray Anderson. This event is free and open to the public.
On Thursday, Dec. 8th a 4th jazz combo will open for Stony Brook's famed big band, the SBU Blowage. The evening will include works of Basie, Ellington, Goodman, Anderson and others. Tickets: $8. General admission, $4 Students.

On Monday 12/5, from 9am - 9pm and Tuesday 12/6, from 8am - 4pm, Union Fireside Lounge, The Craft Center will hold its annual Holiday Pottery Sale. 2. Defensive Driving Program Offered for UUP employees and their immediate family members.

A NYSUT sponsored Defensive Driving program is being offered on Saturday, January 7, 2006 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM in the Wang Center Room 301, for all UUP employees and their immediate family members.
Cost is $25 per person. Checks should be made payable to "NYSUT Benefit Trust" and delivered to the UUP office, 104 Old Chemistry, Z=3475. Office hours are Monday thru Friday, 9 am to 3 pm.
Participants are usually entitled to a 10% discount on their automotive insurance. Check with your provider. The certificate is good for three years of savings!

3. NEW Weight Watchers At Work Program

NEW 10 week Weight Watchers @ Work will begin Tuesday, January 10,2006. Meetings are 12:30 - 1:30 PM in room 2-408 HSC. Payment for the 10 week program is $99.00 if paid by Tuesday December 20, 2005. 4. Elevated Lipids and Cholestol -- An Integrative Approach to Optimize Levels

The Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness in the Department of Family Medicine will be conducting four two-hour group visits for patients with elevated lipids and cholesterol.
Participants are examined and evaluated individually to assess cardiovascular risk, nutrition, exercise and stress levels as well as to determine if their lipid management is optimal. The group visits review factors that contribute to cardiovascular risk and increasing levels of lipids and insulin and addresses how they can be decreased with whole foods, exercise and stress reduction. Also reviewed are genetic influences, indications for medications, their side effects profile as well as the most current evidence-based information on supplements and vitamins.
The series is scheduled for January 4, 11, 18, 25 2006 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at 33 Research Way, Stony Brook Technology Park. Please call 444-9815 to register.

Our trained volunteer tutors can help adults learn to read and write (Basic Literacy) or to speak English and learn the American Culture(ESOL - English for Speakers of Other Languages.) 2. Volunteer To Work With Young Children At Stony Brook Child Care Services

Enjoy working and playing with young children? Know someone else who does? Join the team at Stony Brook Child Care Services as a volunteer. Work alongside our professional teaching staff in a facility designed and equipped for very young children. You can volunteer for as few as 3 hours a week and can choose to work with Infants and Toddlers or Preschoolers. The center is open Monday through Friday 7 am - 6 pm year round.
