1. Nicotine Anonymous Open Discussion Meetings

Nicotine Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women helping each other to live free of nicotine. The only requirement is the desire to stop using nicotine. These meetings are open to patients and visitors as well as the community. Metings will be every Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. in the Heart Center Conference Room of Stony Brook University Hosptal Level 5.

1. Tutor Training Workshop

The Adult Literacy Center at Stony Brook is seeking volunteer tutors to tutor individuals on basic literacy and english speaking skills. The only requirement for volunteering is that you have a high school degree. In order to become a volunteer, you need to attend a tutor training workshop. The dates are as follows: September 22, 29, Oct. 6, 13, 20, 27, November 3, 17, 2005 (must attend all sessions)
Time of all sessions: 5:30pm-8:30pm
Workshop held on campus for your convenience!

2. TEAMWORK: What's Trust Got To Do With It?

Have you ever been on a team where you couldn't seem to get anything done? Or the team members just couldn't work together? It is quite possible that the team members did not trust one another; lack of trust is one of the main impediments to effective teamwork. This video training program demonstrates how to build and maintain trust among team members.

3. Conflict Management (Course #HTPD09) (Corporate Education & Training)

No matter how hard you try, you can't avoid conflict! Some people thrive on conflict; while others walk away from it. During this program, participants will gain an understanding of conflict-related behavior and learn how to manage it more successfully.

5. Lawson Training

Lawson Training Class to be held on 8/29/05 from 1pm to 4pm, in the IT Training Room, (HSB - Library - Computer Classroom - Room 3-133A). "For All Employees" To attend this class, please contact Michele Thomas, Lawson Support Specialist, ext. 4-7805. There will be 2 parts to this class, the first half is for ordering from the Storeroom in the hospital and the second half will be for ordering from an outside Vendor. Since it is very hard to get this classroom and I am not sure when I could get this class again, I suggest that all employees who are either new to Stony Brook or just would like a refresher course attend this class.

1. Celebrity Softball Game to Benefit SBUH Burn Unit- August 27 at Citibank Park

All are welcome to the HOLLYWOOD ALLSTARS Celebrity Softball game to benefit Stony Brook University Hospital's Burn Unit on Saturday, August 27, at Citibank Park in Central Islip, NY, the home of the Long Island Ducks.
This 9-inning charity event will pit the Hollywood Allstars against the New York Celebrity Allstars in an action packed game that promises to be a great evening for all who attend. Gates Open 5:30 PM and Game Time is 6:30 PM.

2. Fundamentals of the Bioscience Industry Program.

Information session Wednesday, August 24th, 6 - 7:30 pm. Center for Biotechnology. Stony Brook University
This program is targeted toward graduate students and post docs seeking to transition into non-academic industry careers. Strongly interdisciplinary, this innovative and cutting edge program draws its faculty and courses directly from the bioscience industry. This program will provide life scientists with a comprehensive understanding of the bioscience business environment to effectively enter the industry and/or government sector and to successfully contribute to the innovation and entrepreneurial aspects of industry. Meet and discuss the program with Course Directors, Jeff Yablon, former Chief Operating Officer at Icon Laboratories, Dr. Paul Scheiffle, President, inGenious Targeting Laboratory, Inc. and the program Alumni. 1. Long Island Database Project - Volunteers Needed

The Long Island Cancer Center is creating a database of blood samples and clinical information to help researchers better understand why some individuals develop breast and prostate cancer while others do not.
Women and men are eligible to participate if they were diagnosed with breast or prostate cancer OR have never been diagnosed with cancer, are 18 years of age or older, are a current Long Island resident and have lived on Long Island for at least 5 years.

4. Healthy Volunteers needed for a study that investigates Sleep and Metabolism in Women with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

If you are woman in good health, We Would Like to Invite You To Participate in a Research Project.
In association with the Northport Veterans Administration and the Stony Brook General Clinical Research Center, researchers are conducting a study that investigates sleep and metabolism in women with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) compared to healthy women.
Healthy volunteers are needed to serve as the comparison group for IBS patients.
Participation involves a blood draw and two over-night sleep studies.
Every aspect of your participation in this study will be kept confidential.
And, as a courtesy for spending time and assisting the completion of this research, you will be compensated financially.

8. Recruiting healthy, right-handed boys, ages 6-11 years, who are not on medication, to take part in a neuroimaging study.

The Cody Center, in collaboration with Brookhaven National Laboratory and the General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) at Stony Brook University, is currently recruiting healthy, right-handed boys, ages 6-11 years, who are not on medication, to take part in a neuroimaging study.
The purpose of the study is to increase our understanding of how language is processed by the brain in the presence of Autism Spectrum Disorder by using an MRI technique called functional MRI (fMRI).
Compensation: $40.00 Gift Certificate to BORDERS Per Visit
The procedure does not involve any injections, use contrast material or radiation. MRI is considered a safe procedure in children.

12. Alzheimer's Disease Trial At SUNY Stony Brook

A Trial of Zocor (an anti-cholesterol medication) to slow the Progression of Alzheimer's Disease. All eligible participants with mild-moderate AD would remain on their current AD treatments, while participating in this trial.

4. New Adult Day Care Benefit for Veterans

The Long Island State Veterans Home Adult Day Care Program now offers veterans a valuable daily per diem credit to reduce the cost of services. The program provides professional nursing care, individualized rehabilitative therapies, nutritious meals, counselling and door-to-door transportation in addition to many other clinical services.
