12. "Gender and the Written Voice: Re-Covering Women's Writing Culture in Colonial Ghana". Lecture by Dr. Audrey Gadzekpo
Dr. Gadzekpo is a senior lecturer at the School of Communication Studies, University of Ghana. She is currently a visiting scholar at the Program of African Studies, Northwestern University, teaching a course on gender, communication and women's rights in Africa.
In colonial histories and in histories of nationalism, the silence on women has been rather deafening. Dominant trends in colonial historiography, for example, have been instrumental in perpetuating a fairly common notion that African women did not engage in politics, and in knowledge production during the colonial period. Increasingly, the multi-vocality of the African woman is being rediscovered. This lecture seeks to resurrect, re-envision and re-construct the history of African women in a space traditionally assumed to be inhospitable to women - the newspaper.
