1. National Hospital Week May 15 - 21

All employees are invited to attend National Hospital Week events to get free health screenings, valuable healthcare information and learn more about the many services offered at the hospital. Enjoy a healthy snack, lively music and a chance to win a raffle prize. Visit Tech Park on Tuesday, May 17, 1:30 - 4 pm at Building 31, Research Way or the HSC Galleria, Wednesday, May 18, 11 am - 2pm, where a lunch cart will be available to purchase food. 1. Providing Outstanding Customer Service

Providing customer service is easy, but providing OUTSTANDING customer service requires skill. During this highly interactive workshop, we will:
- Define "outstanding" customer service
- Understand customer expectations and needs and meet them by using active listening and questioning techniques
- Convey positive messages to your customer by using body language, tone of voice and words
- Handle more challenging and difficult customer service situations
- Use proper telephone etiquette, including: Handling the telephone in a professional manner, building rapport with customers by addressing them correctly, using proper voice qualities, transferring the call appropriately, and taking complete telephone messages.

2. Situational Case Studies for Supervisors

In this highly interactive workshop, participants are given the opportunity to apply the skills learned in the "Foundations of Supervising" program. They work, read and analyze several case studies followed by whole group discussions.

3. Effective Interviewing Techniques

This program is designed for State and RF managers, search committees and those responsible for interviewing candidates. The program will include:
- Preparing for an interview
- Setting the tone for a successful interview
- Avoiding discrimination and illegal questioning
- Gathering appropriate, job related information from the candidate
- Closing the interview
- Documenting the interview
- How to develop a Resume Screening document
- General interview questions to get answers you need
- Legal and illegal interview questions

4. Tutor Training Workshop

The Adult Literacy Center at Stony Brook is seeking volunteer tutors to tutor individuals on basic literacy and english speaking skills. The only requirement for volunteering is that you have a high school degree. In order to become a volunteer, you need to attend a tutor training workshop. The dates are as follows: September 22, 29, Oct. 6, 13, 20, 27, November 3, 17, 2005 (must attend all sessions)
Time of all sessions: 5:30pm-8:30pm

7. EAP Lunchtime Learning Breaking the Ice, How to Talk to Anyone, Anytime, Anyplace

Fran Greene, A.C.S.W., a well-known communication and relationship expert, will discuss the art of meeting people for fun, friendship, adventure, or romance. She also gives tips on how to make a fabulous first impression while radiating poise and confidence. Her expertise is on such topics as social and relationship skills, assertiveness, communication, and dating. She has taught at Cornell University, Adelphi and Suffolk Community College. Fran has appeared on such TV programs as The Today Show, Dateline NBC and News 12. She also has been featured in The New York Times, Newsday and Self Magazine.

1. National Cancer Survivor Day - Carousel of Life

SBUH is proud to host CAROUSEL of LIFE, as we celebrate National Cancer Survivor Day. All survivors and their guests are invited to join us on Sunday, June 5, 2005 at Ward Melville High School for this exciting event. There will be entertainment, food, games, prizes, a chance to share some quality time with your family and medical staff in an informal, festive setting. Registration is required. 2. Join us for the 3rd Annual Children Helping Children Walk-a-thon to benefit Pediatric Cancer Patients

Sunday June 5th is the 3rd Annual Children Helping Children Walk-a-thon at St. James Elementary School, Lake Avenue, St. James. Bring your family out for a morning of fun, complete with raffle prizes and special guest appearances. Registration begins at 8AM. Registration fees: $15 for individuals, $20 for families, and FREE with a completed sponsor sheet. In the event of rain, the event will be at the Smithaven Mall, meet in the Food Court. 3. Book Drive

Donate your used textbooks to help promote literacy worldwide! Your used books could rebuild schools in Sri Lanka destroyed by the tsunami and give the gift of education to a Sri Lankan child. Volunteers for Community Service and Golden Key International Honour Society will conduct a book drive on campus. 5. Can You Contribute 15 Minutes A Day To Help Feed Homeless Cats On Campus?

The SBU Cat Network works to humanely trap, neuter, vaccinate, and care for the many feral cats that live on campus. We need additional help maintaining feeding stations all over campus during the summer when students leave campus. Food is provided, all you need to do is distribute it daily. 6. CSEA Region 1 Veterans Committee

To commemorate Memorial Day the CSEA Rgion 1 Veterans Committee will decorate the graves of deceased CSEA members who had served in the armed forces and are interred at Calverton National Cemetary. 1. Art Lee & Tokara: Japanese Taiko Drumming Concert Sunday, May 15, 3:00 p.m., Wang Center Theater

Tokara, a strong force in the world of taiko, both in and outside of Japan, is known for its electrifying speed and power. Tokara creates a whole new world of performance by successfully fusing African and Korean drumming with Taiko, the movements of Chinese martial arts and dance. Artistic Director Art Lee is the first non-Japanese to be given the artistic visa to teach Taiko in Japan.

3. When He's Sixty-Four! Several artists to celebrate Bob Dylan's birthday at The University Cafe, May 24th, at 8 P.M.

Bob Dylan turns 64 on May 24th and the University Cafe celebrates his birthday with a Dylan song-circle concert featuring several artists performing Dylan's songs.
Featured are: Beaucoup Blue, a Philadelphia-based acoustic duo of father and son David and Adrian Mowry on six and twelve string guitars, slide guitar, dobro and vocals.
Caroline Doctorow, a Sag Harbor resident, who counts as her influences Mimi and Richard Farina, Joan Baez, Tom Paxton, and Bob Dylan.
Pat Wictor, a lap-style slide guitarist who blends the influences of tradition-minded musicians of the past and present to create a distinctive voice of his own.
To commemorate this special evening, all attending will receive a special, limited edition poster designed by Iron Horse Graphics.

1. Getting the Most out of your Wining and Dining Experience:

The mysteries of deciphering a wine list will be unveiled in this interactive session with noted wine professional Cliff Batuello. Reading a wine label, communicating with the Sommelier, and pairing your food and wine choice will be discussed. This will be a give and take session, anecdotal, with table-side "lab work." Cliff Batuello is the owner of a small vineyard in Cutchogue. He has worked in the wine industry for many years as both a sommelier and a marketing representative. Cliff is currently with Michael Skurnik Wines. Some an join us for this fun and informative evening.

2. Job Opportunity - Provost's Liaison Management Trainee

The Provost's Liaison Management Trainee (1 year term with possible 1 year renewal) is open to Stony Brook graduates with a Bachelor's degree or higher. The position is responsible for all aspects of collecting requisitions for textbooks and course materials from faculty; for documenting bookstore performance in providing textbooks and course materials; and for updating, maintaining, and coordinating the University Bookstore web site. The position will involve extensive personal interactions with instructors throughout the year, maintaining current customer service databases, and providing full reports to senior staff at FSA and the Office of the Provost.

4. Treating Depression, Preventing Suicide & Restoring Lives Amoung Young Adults

Response of Suffolk County and Suffolk Community College's Human Services Dept. are hosting a free Presentation and Discussion featuring the film "The Truth about Suicide: Real Stories of Depression in College" on Tueday May 10, 2005 at 7:30 pm. Guest speakers are Suicide Survivor Ray Aarons and Director of Response Crisis Hotline Sonia Wagner. Location is the Suffolk Community College, Babylon Student Center Ammerman Campus, Selden off Nicholls Road.
