1. 2005 Fall Semester Tuition Waiver Program

All full-time west campus/hsc state employees and all full-time research foundation employees may apply for a B140w tuition waiver for the fall 2005 semester. You may check the West Campus Benefits website for the pertinent information and contact 2-6167 or 2-6136 for the waiver form. Be sure to include your internal zip code when you call.
STATE HOSPITAL/VETERANS HOME/TECH PARK employees must contact Shirley Menzies at 4-4759 for a waiver form.

2. New IDC grant numbers for Stapleslink Accounts

All Research IDC grants will term on Stapleslink.com on June 30,2005. Updating user profiles is a manual process. Please email Mary Woodward what your new IDC grant number as soon as possible to assure the smoothest possible transition and continuation of services. Thank you.

4. Important information for State employees in the NYS Employees' Retirement System (ERS)

We are pleased to inform you that beginning July 5, 2005 ERS members can make an appointment for a retirement consultation with the ERS office at 330 Motor Parkway in Hauppauge by calling their toll free number, 1-866-805-0990. Their office hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

1. Nicotine Anonymous Open Discussion Meetings

Nicotine Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women helping each other to live free of nicotine. The only requirement is the desire to stop using nicotine. These meetings are open to patients and visitors as well as the community. Metings will be every Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. in the Heart Center Conference Room of Stony Brook University Hosptal Level 5.

Summer Science and Research Awareness Series
Objective of the Series: This lecture and workshop series is designed to bring awareness on different aspects of basic, clinical and translational sciences. Several faculty and staff of the SUNY medical School will be participating in this program consisting of lectures, expert's views, video workshops and hands-on-workshops.

2. Coaching Your Staff; Giving Constructive Feedback

During this session supervisors will identify the key components of coaching: setting performance expectations, monitoring progress toward meeting the expectations, coaching in a corrective way if expectations are not met, and providing supportive coaching. Supervisors will also gain an understanding of how coaching takes place informally on a daily basis.

1. Determinants of Influenza Vaccination Timing - Dr. Byung-Kwang Yoo, Centers for Disease Control & Prevention

The Graduate Program in Public Health invites you to attend a lecture presented by Dr. Byung-Kwang Yoo, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, on June 29, 2005. Dr. Yoo will discuss "DETERMINANTS OF INFLUENZA VACCINATION TIMING". The lecture will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 PM, in the large conference room of the Preventive Medicine Department in the Health Sciences Center, on Level 3.

1. Long Island Ducks Tickets for UUP Members

United University Professions has tickets available to the Friday, July 8, 2005 "Long Island Ducks" vs. "Nashua, NH" Baseball Game and Pre-Game Picnic. Weight Watchers at Work will begin new meetings at Stony Brook University Hospital very shortly. Sessions are 10 weeks, meeting on Tuesday at 1:15 P.M. The cost is $99.00 for the 10 week period.

A PASSION FOR PASTELS: Five Tuesdays, begins 6/28, 6pm - 8pm; Union 081. Cost: $50/student, $75/non-student. With their velvety bloom, softness and fresh, bright colors, pastels are one of the most attractive of all media. Here is an opportunity to explore basic techniques that will enable you to enjoy the directness and spontaneity of this classic art form. CREATING WITH WATERCOLOR Five Thursdays: begins 6/30, 6pm - 8pm. Cost: $50/student, $75/ non-student; Union 08. Learn the fundamentals, plenty of guidance and practice. Intro to Fine Art Photography; Five Wednesdays, begins June 29, 6pm - 8:00pm, Union 062. Cost: $80/student, $95/non-student. A combination of camera use and the basics of working in a black and white darkroom. Develop film, make contact sheets and enlargements. No prior experience required. 1. Long Island Database Project - Volunteers Needed

The Long Island Cancer Center is creating a database of blood samples and clinical information to help researchers better understand why some individuals develop breast and prostate cancer while others do not.
Women and men are eligible to participate if they were diagnosed with breast or prostate cancer OR have never been diagnosed with cancer, are 18 years of age or older, are a current Long Island resident and have lived on Long Island for at least 5 years.

2. Free Couples Therapy!

Dr. Daniel O'Leary and Ms. Shiri Cohen from the University Marital Clinic are looking for couples to participate in a therapy study. If you are married or cohabitating with a partner, and one of you is currently feeling depressed, you may be eligible to receive a free, 5-week couples treatment to help you and your partner learn more about depression and ways to cope with the stress you may be facing. Please contact Ms. Shiri Cohen at 632-7850 for more information about this study. This research project is funded by the National Institute of Mental Health.

3. Volunteers needed to take 5 minute survey regarding barriers to referrals into SBUH's Facilitated Enrollment Community Outreach Program

To participate in this study you must meet the following inclusion criteria: male or female, 18 years of age or older; have the ability to read and write English; are a current employee of SBUH and have direct patient contact. You can never make a second first impression! Please join your colleagues and 350 student volunteers in welcoming our new residential students upon checking-in, to on campus housing. This is an opportunity to spend several hours on Friday, August 26th meeting the new students and their parents, answering questions, and assisting with moving the student's personal items into their rooms. What you will get out of this is a sense of satisfaction, spending time with new and returning students, breakfast, lunch, a free T-Shirt and appreciation!
