1. Fall Pride Patrol Postponed for 2005

Due to construction and the many improvements being made around campus, Fall Pride Patrol will not take place in October, 2005. Information regarding Spring Pride Patrol, scheduled to take place on April 21, 2006, will be sent in the Spring.

2. Travel: New Mileage Rate

MILEAGE RATE: The IRS has made a special adjustment to the mileage rate for the final four months of 2005. Effective September 1, 2005, the rate has been increased to 48.5 cents a mile for all business miles driven between September 1 and December 31, 2005. This is an increase of 8 cents from the 40.5 cents rate in effect for the first eight months of 2005. The new mileage rate applies to both State and Research Foundation travel.

3. Employee Benefit Information Fair

The Benefits Section of Human Resource Services will host an Employee Benefit Information Fair on Monday, October 17, 2005 in the Wang Center Lobby from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Please join us for a day of information, giveaways and raffles. Representatives from health insurance plans, retirement plans, union benefits, Social Security Administration, EAP; and health and wellness programs will be available to answer your questions. We look forward to seeing State and Research Foundation employees at the Fair. Look for the Employee Benefit Information Fair flyers with your paychecks and be sure to bring the raffle entry form to the fair. Do not miss this great event; it could be your lucky day!

4. Travel: 2006 Per Diem And Meal Allowance Rates

Please note that all State and Research Foundation travel starting October 1, 2005 will follow the new 2006 Per Diem Rates for lodging and meals for domestic travel. The Meal Allowance Breakdown schedule has also been updated and goes into effect on October 1, 2005. The new rates can be found on the Procurement website: www.procurement.sunysb.edu, click on Employees, then Travel , click on Travel Links for links to Per Diem Travel Rates and Meal Allowance Schedule.

1. The Family Violence Education and Research Center School of Social Welfare Presents the 2005 Clothesline Project.

The Family Violence Education and Research Center of the School of Social Welfare, in conjunction with the University Hospital social work department and other schools in the Health Sciences Center, will be creating a Clothesline Project in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
The Clothesline Project is a visual display that bears witness to violence against women, and is a powerful tool that educates, documents, and raises awareness about this important issue.
The Clothesline Project will be created and displayed in the Galleria in the Health Sciences Center on Thursday, October 6, 2005 from 10:30am to 1:00pm. For more information, please contact Ellen Kosloff at 444-3694

Strongly interdisciplinary, this innovative and cutting edge program draws its faculty and courses directly from the bioscience industry. 6. Truth in Technologies 2005: Supply Chain RFID.

Stony Brook University Libraries and the Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology will host the 2nd annual "Truth in Technologies" conference on October 27, 2005 (8:30 am - 5:30 pm) in the Student Activities Center (SAC) to provide a clear vision of the issues arising between RFID (radio frequency identification) technology and Supply Chain systems. This international event will include speakers from the "user" community who will clarify the issues dictating the implementation of RFID.

8. International Symposium on Language and Communication; the Evolution of Language

The first Alice V. and David H. Morris International Symposium on Language and Communication which will draw eminent scientists from around the globe to Stony Brook University to discuss fundamental issues in, and implications of, current research in human language, will be held October 14-16, 2005 in the theatre of the Charles B. Wang Center.
Participants from a broad array of disciplines will gather to discuss the state of the art in research on the Evolution of Language. Fields represented include Anthropology, Archeology, Biology, Computer Science, Cognitive Science, Genetics, Linguistics, Psychology, and Sociology. The aim of this symposium is to act as a forum for interaction and discussion regarding findings at the interface of each of these fields, drawing on the unique perspective that each participant brings to the topic.

The University Cafe will begin its Sunday afternoon acoustic series with Suzzy and Maggie Roche, at 2 P.M. on October 2nd. These well-known New York City - based performers have been singing together for most of their lives and their show will be a thoughtful musical journey featuring their unique style and including songs from thirty years of writing and performing. 2005 Wellness Expo, Wednesday, October 19, 2005, 11:00am - 2:00pm, SAC, Ballroom A & B
The Department of Campus Recreation will be hosting a Wellness Expo on Wednesday, October 19, 2005. This event will take place from 11:00am - 2:00pm in the Student Activities Center Ballroom A & B. Activities will include health screenings, fitness demonstrations, massage therapy, reflexology, interactive activities and information provided by Stony Brook University departments and local community businesses. This event is free and open to all faculty, staff, and Stony Brook students.

4. Free Junior Seawolves Basketball League

The First Annual Junior Seawolves Basketball League is now accepting applications for boys ages 7 to 9. The league will run each Sunday beginning October 30th and ending November 20th from 4-6 pm in the Stony Brook Sports Complex. Participation in the league is FREE OF CHARGE and is limited to the first 40 applicants. East meets West as renowned chef Guy Reuge of Mirabelle Restaurant in St. James translates his discoveries from a recent visit to China into exciting adaptations to his four-star cuisine. Appropriate wine matches included.

1. Senior Citizen Law Day - Saturday, October 8th, 2005 Free Educational Seminars designed to assist families in senior life planning.

Assemblyman Steve Englebright, the Long Island State Veterans Home and the Suffolk County Bar Association are pleased to present Senior Citizen Law Day on Saturday, October 8th, 2005 from 9 AM to 3 PM. This special community event will take place at the Student Activities Center of Stony Brook University.
Throughout the day, elder law attorneys and health care professionals will provide objective and reliable informational sessions on important topics such as: Asset Protection, Medicare Part D, Identity Theft, Wills/Trust, Selecting a Nursing Home, and many more.
Through the generous corporate support provided by Prudential-Douglas Elliman Real Estate, Jefferson's Ferry, Citibank, Atria Assisted Living and the Long Island State Veterans Home, this special event is being offered to the public free of charge.

3. Volunteer to work with young children at Stony Brook Child Care Services

Enjoy working and playing with young children? Know someone else who does? Join the team at Stony Brook Child Care Services as a volunteer. Work alongside our professional teaching staff in a facility designed and equipped for very young children. You can volunteer for as few as 3 hours a week and can choose to work with Infants and Toddlers or Preschoolers. The center is open Monday through Friday 7 am - 6 pm year round.
