The IRS limits for tax deferral are increasing in 2006 to $15,000. If you are 50 or older, you may defer up to $20,000. If you wish to change you current deduction, you must complete a new Salary Reduction Agreement from which can be located on the HR website.

The Office of the Vice President for Research will present a Grant-writing workshop on Wednesday, January 18 at the Student Activities Center, from Noon to 1:30 P.M.
Led by Dr. Martin Schoonen, Associate Vice President for Research and Professor of Geosciences, and by Mr. Peter Saal of the Research Resources Center, the program will explore a variety of topics, including:
- where to find grant information
- the new Grants.gov portal for all federal grant applications
- developing and writing of a compelling grant application

Mayr from the Atmospheric Chemistry and Dynamics Branch, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, will present a seminar entitled, "Interannual Variations of the Diurnal Tide in the Mesosphere Generated by the Quasi-biennial Oscillation," on Wednesday, November 30. 3. PRIDE Holiday Concert Dec. 10th
Featuring the New York City Gay Men's Chorus
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Faculty, Staff Network at Stony Brook University is hosting the Holiday Pride Concert on Saturday, December 10, at 8:00 p.m. in the Student Activities Center Auditorium to benefit the Pride Scholarship Fund.

4. World AIDS Day Film: To Live Is Better Than To Die Thursday, December 1, 4:00 p.m., Wang Center Theater FREE
A powerful and an unsentimental portrait of the bleak day-to-day existence of an AIDS-stricken family in Wenlou, Central China, where 60% of the villagers are infected with HIV because they made a little extra money selling their blood in the early 90s. The film chronicles how an ordinary Chinese family is devoured by a disease caused by official negligence and then is persecuted by the government in their struggle for help. 6. World AIDS Day Film: My Brother Nikhil Thursday, December 1, 7:00 p.m., Wang Center Theater FREE
Nikhil Kapoor (Sanjay Suri) is the state swimming champion of Goa and the pride and joy of his parents (Victor Banerjee and Lillette Dubey). Handsome, jovial, and charming, he is the idol of his peers and well loved by his friends. But all this changes on August 8, 1989, when Nikhil is arrested for being HIV positive. Fallen from grace, he is rejected by his once loving family and ostracized by society, except for his sister Anu (Juhi Chawla), who defies her parents to care and protect her brother, and his lover Nigel de Costa (Purab Kohli) who tenaciously holds on to their bond. The Long Island Cancer Center is creating a database of blood samples and clinical information to help researchers better understand why some individuals develop breast and prostate cancer while others do not.
Women and men are eligible to participate if they were diagnosed with breast or prostate cancer OR have never been diagnosed with cancer, are 18 years of age or older, are a current Long Island resident and have lived on Long Island for at least 5 years.

4. 2006 Innovative Technology Development Program - Call for Applications
The Center for Biotechnology announces the "2006 Call for Applications" to the Innovative Technology Development (ITD) Program. The ITD Program supports commercially promising, translational research in all areas of medical biotechnology, including research products, diagnostics, or therapeutics. Funding is available to faculty at SBU for translational research on the academic campus. Applications must provide matched funding from a New York State company, evidence for commercialization potential, and be consistent with the Centers' mission of economic development in NYS. We encourage projects in collaboration with the Center's Applied Bioscience Laboratories (ABL) or Custom Microarray Facility (CMF).

This study involves pulmonary function testing, followed by 2 days (about 4 hours on the first day and 2 hours on the second day) of chest imaging. We will be studying whether your weight is affecting the way your lungs clear things that you breathe in.

13. Recruiting healthy, right-handed boys, ages 6-11 years, who are not on medication, to take part in a neuroimaging study.
The Cody Center, in collaboration with Brookhaven National Laboratory and the General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) at Stony Brook University, is currently recruiting healthy, right-handed boys, ages 6-11 years, who are not on medication, to take part in a neuroimaging study.
The purpose of the study is to increase our understanding of how language is processed by the brain in the presence of Autism Spectrum Disorder by using an MRI technique called functional MRI (fMRI).
Compensation: $40.00 Gift Certificate to BORDERS Per Visit
The procedure does not involve any injections, use contrast material or radiation. MRI is considered a safe procedure in children.

In association with the Northport Veterans Administration and the Stony Brook General Clinical Research Center, researchers are conducting a study that investigates sleep and metabolism in women with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) compared to healthy women.

Participation involves a blood draw and two over-night sleep studies.

3. An essay competition with 2,000 dollar award for undergraduates--"Japan and Me"
We have extended the deadline for submission for "The Japan Center - Canon Essay Competition at Stony Brook University" to December 20th, 2005. The theme of this year's essay competition is "Japan and Me." The essay can be written in English, and is open to all undergraduate students in any academic areas (college division) and 10th, 11th, and 12th graders (high school division) on Long Island and in New York City. The college category award recipient will receive $2,000, and the three high school category award recipients each will receive $1,500.
