A, B, C, D
    • Academic Career: The type of “career” the student is pursuing [e.g., Undergraduate (UGRD), Graduate (GRAD), Dental (DEN), or Medical School (MEDS)].
    • Academic Plan: An area of study--major, minor or specialization--within an academic program.
    • Academic Program: The program within an institution to which a student applies, is admitted, and ultimately graduates from.
    • Academic Requirement: A requirement to be satisfied by the student in order to graduate.
    • Academic Session: A time period during which classes are scheduled within an academic term. (Depending on the department, sometimes the session is the same period as the term.)
    • Academic Subject Area: A specific area of instruction.
    • Academic Term: An administrative time period within which sessions are defined, students are billed, and statistics are accumulated for individual students as well as for the entire school.
    • Admit Term: The first term in which an applicant is expected to enroll in an academic program.
    • Advisory Prerequisite: Recommended class(es) to take before enrolling in your chosen class
    • AOI: Area of Interest. May be a student's academic plan before declaring a major. Cannot be used by students as a major for the TAP (Tuition Assistance Program) declaration when student is enter their junior class status.
    • Career: The type of “career” the student is pursuing [e.g., Undergraduate (UGRD), Graduate (GRAD), Dental (DEN), or Medical School (MEDS)].
    • Checklist Item: A unit of work that needs to be completed by a person. (e.g. an action, a required document, or a phone call.)
    • Class: A section of a course that is being offered in the current term.
    • Class Number: (abbreviated "Class Nbr"), The number the student uses to enroll for a specific class section. (e.g. 1547) (see Class Numbers and Components)
    • Component: Indicates the section type of the class (e.g., lab, recitation, lecture, seminar, etc.) (see Class Numbers and Components)
    • Course: Has the potential to be offered as a class, but not every course is offered/scheduled in every term.
    • Course Number: The number that appears in the Stony Brook course catalog (e.g., 131, for PHY 131.)
    • Credits: Number of credit hours for which the course is being offered (sometimes seen as "units").

E, F, G
    • Effective Date: Specifies the time in which a particular change or action became effective. This allows for historical record keeping, and for future actions to be processed.
    • Enroll: To Register
    • Enrollment Appointment: the time at which the student becomes eligible to enroll for classes. The student can enroll any time after that, through the end of the add/drop period.
    • Enrollment Component: The component for which you must enroll when enrolling in a multiple-component course. If there is a course made up of a lecture and a lab, for example, the lab is usually the enrollment component. With only a few exceptions, you will be automatically enrolled for the other linked component(s) once you have enrolled for the enrollment component.
    • FERPA Indicator: An indicator in a student's account that the student has filed a request under FERPA to restrict the release of some of his or her directory information.
    • GPA: Grade Point Average.
    • Grading Basis: Defines class grading basis, such as graded with a letter grade or optional pass/fail.

L, M, N
    • Multiple-Component Course: A course with more than one component. These components are almost always linked by the autoenroll function.
    • Name Type: A name type is a label assigned to an individual's name. Two examples of name type would be "maiden" and "degree" (the name that a graduate chooses to have printed on his or her diploma).

O, P, Q, R
    • Password: Your password is a series of letters and numbers. It provides security and privacy for your personal records.
    • Permission: Consent required to enroll in a class. Once the student has been given this consent, the system recognizes the student's ID and allows him or her access to enroll.
    • Plan: An area of study--major, minor or specialization--within an academic program.
    • Program: The program within an institution to which a student applies, is admitted, and ultimately graduates from.
    • Related Classes: In only a few multiple-component courses, you will not be automatically enrolled for the additional component(s) when you enroll for the enrollment component; you must choose them as related classes.
    • Reserves: Seats reserved in a class for a specific type of student (e.g., seniors, majors, minors, student group, honors college, etc.).
    • Requirement Term: The starting term of the student’s career. (formerly referred to: matriculation date)

S, T, U, V
    • Service Indicators/Holds: System blocks (e.g., financial hold, advising block) that may prevent certain enrollment transactions or issuance of diplomas and transcripts. Follow instructions provided.
    • Stony Brook ID: (NOT YOUR SSN!) a unique ID number used for all enrollment, financial aid and student accounts transactions. [Not the student’s social security number.]
    • Section: Different class components are indicated by the section number (e.g., R01 means Recitation - Section 1, L01 means Lab – Section 1, T01 means Tutorial - Section 1.)
    • Session: A time period during which classes are scheduled within an academic term. (Depending on the department, sometimes the session is the same period as the term.)
    • "Swap this Class": use to exchange or "swap" one class for another (add and drop in one transaction). During tuition liability period, a "Swap" is a class that is exchanged for another and it "must be" of equal credits. If a swap is processed for a course of less credits than the one the student was previously registered in, a tutition liability will be incurred. If a swap is processed for more credits than the student was previously registered in, then their is no loss tuition reflected. There will be addition tuition and fees possibly for the additional credits..
    • Term, Academic: An administrative time period within which sessions are defined, students are billed, and statistics are accumulated for individual students as well as for the entire school.
    • To Do’s: list of items that the student needs to act upon. Follow instructions provided.
