The Hillel Foundation for Jewish Life is the Jewish Chaplaincy on the State University of New York at Stony Brook campus and is a member organization of the University Interfaith Center. The members of the Interfaith Center share use of a beautiful Multi-Purpose Room/Chapel, student lounge area, and student meeting rooms. The Snyder Hillel Center houses our staff offices, lounge areas for students, study areas with internet access for students, a Jewish Multi-Media Resource Center and the Hillel Library, including books on audiotape and the Jewish Heritage Video Library.

Hillel oversees Jewish religious life and kosher dining, and our staff members serve as advisors to various Jewish student cultural and social clubs. Hillel offers informal Judaic Studies courses on such topics as Hebrew Reading, Introduction to Judaism, Jewish Ethics etc. The Hillel Staff is prepared to assist you in any way we can, and to provide counselling or referrals if need be. Whether it is a family problem, religious issue, roommate trouble, or just an ear to listen: we are here for you.

Organized Jewish life on campus dates to 1964 and has always been led by strong student involvement through the Hillel Board. The Hillel Foundation provides staff support, funding, and professional guidance through its staff and Board of Directors. The Board of Directors include faculty, staff, alumni, members of the local community, and students.

The Snyder Hillel Center houses our staff offices, lounge and study areas with internet access for students, a Jewish Multi-Media Resource Center, and the Hillel Library. Stop by anytime to play a game of foosball, watch a video, have a snack, hang out with friends - or make new ones - Our House is Your House!

Social Justice - Tzedek:

Tons of Love
Tons of Love was created by students, and is driven entirely by our student's passions. Each semester, the members of this group log 2000 hours of service at soup kitchens, childrens hospitals, nursing homes and more. They are working towards that most central Jewish value - Tikkun Olam. If you would like to get involved, contact Yelena Poklad at ypoklad@yahoo.com

Seders on Wheels
SOW is one component of Tons of Love
Each year we bring Passover to people who otherwise wouldn’t have it with our Seders on Wheels program. Student groups visit local nursing homes to hold model seders and celebrate with the Jewish residents. Special packages are prepared for each person which include all the ingredients for a happy Passover - fulfilling the Jewish imperatives of tzedakah(righteousness), gemilat chasadim (acts of loving kindness), and tikkun olam (improving the world).
Gulf Coast Alternative Break
Looking for something different to do during the winter break? What about a trip that's a blast but meaningful too? Stony Brook is joining National Hilllel program that brings together students from the US and Canada to do service-learning work in areas affeccted by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Students spend a week working to rebuild the community while also working to understand the Jewish take on poverty, disaster, charity and responsibility. Students volunteer repairing homes and are given the opportunity to attend a variety of night programs.

Space is extremely limited so please sign up early.

UJA Super Sunday
Every February student and staff volunteers join the UJA-Federation Phone-a-thon on a Sunday afternoon to help give back to those who give so much to us! In addition to supporting local agencies like Hillel, UJA-Federation cares for people in need; rescues those in harm’s way; and renews and strengthens the Jewish people in New York, Israel and all around the world. Super Sunday is our annual opportunity to share just a little of our time to make a real difference for real people. We hope you’ll join us to volunteer this year!
