Asian Heritage Month – April 2006


April celebrates the kaleidoscopic diversity and the vibrancy of Asian cultures. Asians in America share a significant unifying factor: they have struggled for their civil rights and have made America a more democratic place for all. This month honors their struggles, traditions and promotes awareness of Asian American contributions to history and society

Tuesday, April 4th, 10:00 p.m.
Asians Culture Mix ‘06
Hand College Classroom / Tabler Quad
This event will feature traditional and popular samplings of various Asian cultures in a buffet-type
style. There will be Asian music provided for ambience and a montage of short clips featuring Asian commercials, music videos and humorous short clips.

The Chinese Philosophy of Feasting
Lecture Hall 1 / Wang Center
Chinese food historian Jacqueline M. Newman will tease the tastes, cultural significance, social meaning and types of food prepared for lavish banquets, festivals and even simple eating encounters.

This action-packed revenge story launched Amitabh Bachchan as the quintessential angry young man and as the undisputed king of popular Hindi Cinema.

Three Japanese animated movies ( Chrono-Crusade, D-N-Angel and Noir ). Light refreshments served.

Coalition Against Hate Media
Room 306 / Student Activities Center
Introduction of the Coalition Against Hate Media and the work it does in responding to major media justice issues that depict Asians in racist ways. Kai Chu, Director of Asian Media Watch will show inspiring examples of how student leaders across the U.S. are working together and how students can become active.

Enjoy a colorful and fun-filled night of Henna tattoos, a Rangoli competition and other festivities. Experience a wide selection of food and music from Asian culture.

Modern Day Sangaku
Lobby / Wang Center
Sangaku is a Japanese tradition of celebrating geometrical beauty. The assembly and creation of the Sangaku will be led by Dr. George Hart of the Computer Science Department. Lecture and reception to follow at 3:00 p.m.

Korean Night
Auditorium / Student Activities Center
Fashion and talent show to celebrate the Korean culture. Tickets will be available at the Student Activities Center Ticket Office.

Persian Dance and Music by the
Amir Vahab Ensemble
Theater / Wang Center
Iranian traditional dance and music performed by the renowned and eclectic ensemble of the celebrated Amir Vahab. He sings in the traditional Persian style, which embodies millennia of the theoretical and mystical traditions of the ancient land of Iran.

Party explores modern Asian-America through the prism of New York’s Asian party scene. Party probes beneath the artifice to reveal a compelling mosaic of modern Asian-American life in between the parties.
