- Assessment and referral
We provide confidential, information, assessment and referral services to employees, their family members and retirees who are experiencing personal, family or work problems that may negatively affect job performance.
- Educational resources
EAP staff is knowledgeable about helpful books, courses, tapes and videos. We also have information on community groups, resource providers and Web sites.
- Supportive follow-up
Short-term services are provided for clients who find themselves in stressful, complex or sensitive situations. Also, EAP will assist employees preparing to return to work after treatment for medical, mental health and/or substance abuse problems. EAP offers support and follow up for employees during the initial transition back to the work.
Supervisory referrals
- Without performance problems
Employees may be encouraged by a supervisor, union representative, human resource/labor relations representative or another service on campus to contact EAP for assistance due to personal or job performance issues, before the situation requires formal disciplinary action. This is known as an informal referral. The decision to keep an appointment with EAP and accept a referral rests entirely with the employee. If it is helpful for information to be shared with another party, the employee can provide EAP with written authorization. Without written authorization no information will be released by the EAP.
- With performance problems
A formal referral is made when a supervisor identifies, documents and discusses with an employee specific behavioral or job performance problems and makes a recommendation that the employee contact EAP. The supervisor is not expected to act in the role of confidant, counselor or diagnostician. Offering EAP assistance where appropriate, as a confidential, information, assessment, and referral service is good management.
Information and consultation
Supervisors and management personnel may seek resources and ideas about how to resolve workplace problems. Topics cover workplace stress, interpersonal conflict, communication skills, team building and substance abuse education.
The EAP serves as clearinghouse of resources on mental health and wellness. We offer helpful and fun, books, materials, training programs and videos. Refer to the EAP Library on our web site for references and resource information. Our mission is to help our employees maintain a healthy balance between work and family. In doing so, our work lives can be more productive and rewarding. Faculty and staff, eligible family members and organization leadership can take advantage of these services. Examples of training available include such topics as: Balancing Work and Family, Hope and Help at the Holidays, Helping Elderly Parents, How You Can Help a Problem Drinker, Caring for Caregivers, Coping with Change, Stress Management, and many others. EAP is available to customize training and workshops that departments may find helpful.
EAP Professionals and others on the CISD team offer support and guidance to a department or a work group that is affected by a critical incident. A critical incident is defined as a sudden, unexpected, stressful event such as an accident or injury, a death, a threat or act of violence or a disaster. The event may occur in the workplace or in the community. CISD is a technique often used in helping individuals cope with an abnormal situation that produces a strong emotional reaction. A CISD Team’s role is to be available to offer support and resources. The team helps employees cope by listening to what happened and letting them know what they can expect in the healing process.
The EAP offers consultation on workplace policies and procedures that are instrumental in helping our employees maintain a safe and productive workplace. Such policies promoting wellness are related to a Drug Free Workplace and Workplace Violence Prevention. |
